Game Report

Going into tonight’s game, the IceCaps had dropped five of their last six games including three consecutive losses at home.  They needed a spark.  Newcomer Max Friberg got things started almost as quickly as Gabriel Dumont had done the previous night, scoring the first goal of the game just one minute after the opening faceoff.

St. John’s dominated the puck all night, outshooting the Penguins 40-19. Mark MacMillan and Morgan Ellis added to the IceCaps tally in the first period, heading into the locker room ahead 3-2.  Even the struggling power play unit woke up with Ellis’ goal and continued with a man-advantage goal by Bud Holloway in the second.

But each time St. John’s scored two goals, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton came back and scored two of their own.  Then they kept scoring.  The IceCaps watched as their opponent mounted four unanswered goals, with a total of six goals on just 19 shots.  Zach Fucale was pulled after the sixth goal, but the damage was done.

Backchecking was non-existent, and play in the defensive zone was meager at best.  Bad turnovers, dismal coverage, and a couple of soft goals led the IceCaps to another loss and a season sweep by the Penguins.

Coach Sylvain Lefebvre has churned his line combinations in many different ways over the past few games, but it seems that something special is needed to bring the cohesive of the team back to its early-season success.  They next face the Toronto Marlies who come to St. John’s Saturday and Sunday.

Game Report

After a dismal weekend series against the Portland Pirates, the IceCaps came out in full force for tonight’s tilt with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.  Captain Gabriel Dumont made a statement 21 seconds into the game by burying the first shot on goal past Matt Murray.

The first period went mostly in St. John’s favor, with the team staying disciplined and dominating in the offensive zone.  Passes were clean, and the team skated hard.  The IceCaps outshot the Penguins 13-8 in the opening frame, but as the period wound down the Penguins started to gain some energy.

In the second period, it was all Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.  Physicality picked up, with two fights and multiple hard hits, and it seemed the Penguins drained the energy out of the IceCaps.  Giving up a power play goal midway through the period compounded the home team’s frustration.

Despite having five opportunities on the man advantage the IceCaps power play unit couldn’t convert, showing continued signs of struggle.  St. John’s tried to get things back to even late in the third but it was too little, too late.  They have yet to notch a win on this homestand, and will face the Penguins again tomorrow night.

The second line of Michael Bournival, Jacob de la Rose, and Gabriel Dumont were the best on the ice tonight, creating chances and maintaining pressure.  The new third line of Lucas Lessio, Markus Eisenschmid, and Max Friberg was an interesting combination which could potentially heat up if left to build chemistry.

IceCaps Hockey Report Interviews Canadiens Defenceman Greg Pateryn [VIDEO]

WILKES-BARRE, PA. — The Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps are currently on a six-game road trip through Pennsylvania. The IceCaps have one game remaining with the Hershey Bears on Saturday. You can read full reports for each game here.

The IceCaps Hockey Report | All Habs Hockey Magazine team was onsite in Wilkes-Barre as the IceCaps played the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in the second of their two-game series.

Greg Pateryn played in both games against the Penguins after being sent to the IceCaps on what was called a two-week conditioning stint. Pateryn told our crew that he would be returning to the Canadiens on Sunday.

Following Friday night’s action, IceCaps defenceman Greg Pateryn kindly spent a few minutes with our team to talk about the game and his season.

For the first time on the road trip, coach Sylvain Lefebvre made changes to his top-6 forwards, In order to get  more scoring from Daniel Carr, playmaker Bud Holloway was added to the Mike McCarron line. Jacob De La Rose was moved up to center the second line with Charles Hudon and Sven Andrighetto having a quiet road trip so far.

Just over eight minutes into the game, the strategy paid off with Carr picking up his fourth of the year assisted by McCarron and Holloway.

Less than a minute later, Andrighetto took a hooking penalty. A 10-minute misconduct was tacked on for abuse of officials.

It was a strong first period for the IceCaps using their speed and being physical while outshooting the Penguins 11-6. After 20 minutes, St. John’s enjoyed a 1-0 lead.

With seconds left in the first period, Darren Dietz was clipped by a stick. He headed down the tunnel to the dressing room for repairs. Dietz sat at the end of the bench missing a couple of shifts to begin the second period after getting a few stitches during the first intermission.

Wilkes-Barre / Scranton pushed back in the second period going on to outshoot the IceCaps 12-5. But it wasn’t as one-sided as it sounds with the IceCaps skating well and being physical. The McCarron line was the best on the ice for St. John’s.

With 1:11 remaining in the period, a Penguins player fell into goaltender Matt Murray after a scrum in the crease. Former Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos took exception engaging Mike McCarron. The two dropped the gloves with McCarron landing a few solid rights.

The pair received five minutes each for fighting with McCarron getting an extra two for roughing. The league’s best power-play tied the game with 9.1 seconds left in the second.

With new life, the Penguins started to take control in the third period. Almost seven minutes into the frame, Stefan Fournier took a penalty for cross-checking. The IceCaps killed off the penalty but momentum had fully turned.

Wilkes-Barre / Scranton had extended periods in the St. John’s zone dominating play.  With just over five minutes left, goaltender Eddie Pasquale was guilty of over-playing the puck. The Penguins Tim Erixon banked a shot off the skate of Morgan Ellis and into an open net.

The Penguins scored two more times, including an empty-netter, with the three goals coming in a span of just 2:22.  The 4-1 final did not reflect the tightness of the game.

The IceCaps have just one win in five games in Pennsylvania. The will play their final game of the road trip on Saturday against the Hershey Bears. Nikita Scherbak is not yet ready to return and will not play on Saturday.

We learned that Greg Pateryn will be heading back to Montreal on Sunday after playing three games with the IceCaps for conditioning.

  • “Not just the first period, I thought that for the most part, we played a strong game. What hurt us in the second period was offensive zone blue line turnovers and then McCarron’s penalty at the end of the period hurt us pretty bad. Obviously if you kill that one, it’s different. But when you get scored on in the last minute of a period, it’s tough to recover. Having said that I though we played really well and you have to give them credit because their third period was something. They have a good team.”
  • “What I want is for the players to still feel good about their game. It was a 4-1 final but the empty-netter. When they scored the second goal we had a bad change, then they scored the third goal. You can’t give them too much, too many chances because they have skills and they connect on their plays. They are not 8-0 in the last eight (games) for nothing. They’re a really good team. Speed-wise and skill-wise, it’s one of the best teams we have seen so far.”

St. John’s IceCaps Preview: Finishing Strong [VIDEO]

WILKES-BARRE, PA. — After an impressive start to the season, the St. John’s IceCaps have been brought back to earth with just one win in their past four games, all on the road. The six-game road trip through Pennsylvania wraps up with a back-to-back on Friday and Saturday with games in Wilkes-Barre and Hershey.

While playing well for periods of each game, the IceCaps are learning that a sixty-minute effort from the full lineup is required to be successful on a consistent basis.  You can find comprehensive game reports for each game of the road trip here.

The line of Mike McCarron, Daniel Carr and Christian Thomas has led the way. With six goals, McCarron has taken over the team lead with six goals. Bud Holloway has a share of the lead in AHL scoring with four goals and 10 assists for 14 points.

Zach Fucale has made three straight starts. Eddie Pasquale played the better part of two period against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday after Fucale was lifted for giving up three goals on three shots early in the second period.

Mark Barberio has picked up at least a point in each of the last four road games. Greg Pateryn has been added to the defensive corps being assigned to the IceCaps for a conditioning stint.

Game Report

The IceCaps were facing one of the top teams in the AHL early this season. Coming into the game, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins had lost just once, to go along with their seven wins.  After a strong start, St. John’s struggled at times to put together a sixty-minute game on the road trip.

On Wednesday night, the first period was played rather evenly. Shots on goal were 12-10 by the IceCaps with each team scoring once. Mike McCarron picked up his team leading sixth goal on the power-play.

Skipping ahead to the third period, the IceCaps were dominant, particularly the line of Daniel Carr – Mike McCarron – Christian Thomas who had 13 shots combined. St. John’s outshot the Penguins 21-5.

So that leaves the second period. The IceCaps finished the second frame well but in the first four minutes, Zach Fucale gave up three goals on three shots. It’s fair to say that Fucale would have liked two of the goals back.

At the 3:29 mark of the first period Sylvain Lefebvre made a change sending in backup Eddie Pasquale to relieve Fucale. In just over 23 minutes of work, Fucale gave up four goals on 13 shots.

The IceCaps are a young, speedy, talented team. But they have been prone to mistakes and mental lapses. And on this road trip, they have proven to be costly.

Greg Pateryn has joined the IceCaps for a two-week conditioning stint. Pateryn was on the ice for three of the Penguins goals finishing the game at minus-2. On the first Wilkes-Barre/Scranton goal, Pateryn may have been guilty of trying to do too much. But he was physical and moved the puck well.

The IceCaps face the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins once again on Friday with the finale to the road trip coming on Saturday against the Hershey Bears.

  • “I thought we had a good first period, 1-1 after one. In the second period they scored one goal and then two and three. It happened fairly quick.”
  • “I thought that we responded a certain way in the second period and then we responded better in the third. Obviously when you are down 5-1 after two, it’s tough to get back from behind. But you never know what is going to happen. I thought we played really well in the third period, part of the second period too.”
  • “It’s a sixty minute game, you have to play sixty minutes. It doesn’t matter who it is. Whether it’s the goalie, the defensemen or forwards, you need to have all hands on deck for sixty minutes.”
  • “I’m sure that Zach (Fucale) would like to have a few of the goals back. It’s part of a learning process for a young goalie. He’s going to bounce back I’m sure, no doubt in my mind.”

Bulldogs Sign Sahir Gill to PTO

BULLDOGS SIGN SAHIR GILL TO PRO TRY OUT CONTRACT

Forward has played 13 AHL games this season with Hamilton, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton

MONTREAL, QUE. – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Bulldogs have signed forward Sahir Gill to a professional try out contract. He is expected to play tonight as the ‘Dogs take on the Grand Rapids Griffins at FirstOntario Centre at 7 p.m.

Gill has split this season between the Bulldogs, the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins and the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers. In one game with Hamilton, the 22-year-old has recorded no points or penalty minutes. In 12 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, the 5-10, 178-pound forward has recorded three points (one goal, two assists). In 15 games with Wheeling, the Terrace, B.C. native has recorded 15 points (four goals, 11 assists) and four penalty minutes.

Gill also spent the entire 2013-14 season – his first as a professional – with the Nailers. In 67 regular season games with Wheeling, he recorded 54 points (13 goals, 41 assists) and 26 penalty minutes. Before turning pro, he spent three seasons (2010 to 2013) with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Boston University Terriers. In 117 career games with Boston University, he recorded 78 points (28 goals, 50 assists) and 55 penalty minutes.
