Game Report

The Portland Pirates certainly can boast that they have the IceCaps’ number.  They closed out the season series with a sweep against St. John’s. And each game seemed to unfold with a high number of goals against the IceCaps.

The visitors came out a little stronger than they had been on Wednesday night, but still without the right formula to solve goaltender Mike McKenna.  To make matters worse, Markus Eisenschmid took a big hit early in the first period and went off the ice accompanied by the trainer. He did not return to the game.

Bud Holloway returned to the lineup after missing a couple of weeks with injury. He made his mark in the second period by potting a power play goal to tie the game.

But in the third period, yet again, the Pirates ramped things up and Rocco Grimaldi scored a pair of goals along with one by Rob Schremp.  Mark MacMillan snuck one past McKenna with just two seconds left in the game but it was too little too late.

The IceCaps head right to Hartford for a Saturday night matchup against the Wolf Pack to finish out the road trip. Morgan Ellis and Michael McCarron will then head to Syracuse to take part in the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic.

Game Report

The season series against the Portland Pirates hasn’t been pretty for the IceCaps.  After dropping the first two games in St. John’s, the IceCaps needed to come into Cross Insurance Arena strong and confident.  They looked like neither of those things right from the start.

The Pirates poured on the offensive pressure early, forcing netminder Zach Fucale to be sharp early.  The puck traveled back and forth down the sheet fairly evenly throughout the first period, until MacKenzie Weeger found the back of the net to put Portland on the board.

Rocco Grimaldi gave the home team a two-goal lead early in the second, but then the IceCaps seemed to find some much-needed energy.  Lucas Lessio drove to the net hard on multiple shifts during the game and had quite a few good chances, but goaltender Mike McKenna stood tall.

Nikita Scherbak saved the IceCaps from a shutout loss by potting his third goal of the season, assisted by Charles Hudon and Sven Andrighetto.  Discipline came completely unraveled in this game with the IceCaps taking eight minor penalties, two of which came from John Scott.

The IceCaps return to the ice on Friday night when they take on the Portland Pirates once more in this back-to-back series.

Game Report

After a complete breakdown the previous night, losing 5-1 to the Portland Pirates, the St. John’s IceCaps took to the Mile One Centre ice on Saturday looking to bounce back quickly.  But it seemed that they were stuck in the same sluggish cycle from the night before, despite a massive amount of line-juggling done by the coach.

Sylvain Lefebvre moved Michael McCarron back to the first line, where he also placed newcomer Max Friberg on right wing.  Jacob de la Rose found himself promoted to the second line, which bumped Markus Eisenschmid up to the third line.  Charles Hudon was shifted to Eisenschmid’s left wing after centering the first line for the last couple of weeks.

The Pirates came out buzzing in the first period, scoring their first goal just three minutes into the game.  Five minutes later they earned a shorthanded goal, quickly followed by a power play goal.  Eddie Pasquale was immediately pulled from the game after giving up three goals on just seven shots.

Zach Fucale gave a strong performance in relief despite giving up a goal shortly into the second period.  The IceCaps attempted some physicality to muster a spark with their teammates with Dalton Thrower, Gabriel Dumont, and Jeremy Gregoire all dropping the gloves, but to no avail.  Dumont did, however, connect with Eisenschmid and de la Rose late in the third period to get St. John’s on the board.

The IceCaps return to home ice on Tuesday night when the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins come to town for a back-to-back series.

Game Report

After returning to St. John’s from a five-game road trip, the IceCaps had most of the week to prepare for the start of their next home stand with the Portland Pirates coming into town.  But the team that skated onto the Mile One Centre ice Friday night looked like they were tired.  Play moved slowly for St. John’s and they consistently looked unorganized and sloppy.

The Pirates pressed hard in the opening period, getting 20 shots on Zach Fucale with just six shots coming back their way from St. John’s.  Fucale mostly held his own throughout the night, receiving little to no support from the team in front of him.

The IceCaps allowed members of the Pirates to have banner nights: Brent Regner tallied three assists, while Rob Schremp racked up a goal and two assists.

Bud Holloway potted the only goal for the home team on a power play in the second period, assisted by Morgan Ellis and Lucas Lessio.

In roster news, Dustin Tokarski was traded to Anaheim in exchange for Swedish forward Max Friberg.  Friberg is expected to play in St. John’s Saturday night, when the IceCaps take on Portland once again to finish out the back-to-back series.
