ROSTER UPDATE | Canadiens and IceCaps Transaction Summary

A number of callups, reassignments , and PTO/ATO updates have occurred betwee the Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps in the past 48 hours.  Listed below is a summary of all roster news and information.

IceCaps sign Bourque to ATO
SIMON BOURQUE JOINS TEAM FROM RIMOUSKI

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have signed defenceman Simon Bourque to a 25-Game Amateur Tryout contract (ATO).

Bourque, 19, has spent his entire three-year Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) career with the Rimouski Oceanic. In 2015-16, the six-foot-one, 184-pounder scored 12 goals and 46 points in 66 games.

The Longueuil, QC native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 6th round (177th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

 

de la Rose returns to St. John’s
JACOB DE LA ROSE JOINS ICECAPS AT HOME

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Earlier today the Montreal Canadiens reassigned forward Jacob de la Rose to the IceCaps.

The 20-year-old registered an assist in 22 games with the Canadiens this season and has collected four goals and 11 points in 30 games with the IceCaps.

The Arvika, Sweden native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 2nd round (34th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Yogan released from PTO
ANDREW YOGAN HEADS BACK TO CINCINNATI

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have released left-winger Andrew Yogan from a 25-game Professional Tryout contract (PTO).

The 24-year-old registered a goal and five points in 15 games with St. John’s. Yogan collected 40 points in 32 games with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones this season, after previous stints in 2015-16 with the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch (two goals in four games) and Iowa Wild (four points in 16 games).

The six-foot-three, 205-pound native of Coral Springs, FL was drafted in the fourth round, 100th overall, by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

 

IceCaps Sign Addison to ATO
JEREMIAH ADDISON HEADS TO THE ROCK

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have signed left-winger Jeremiah Addison to a 25-Game Amateur Tryout contract (ATO).

Addison, 19, spent the past two seasons with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and previous to that skated with the Saginaw Spirit for two campaigns. In 2015-16, the six-foot, 189-pounder scored 27 goals and 56 points in 66 games.

The Brampton, ON native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 7th round (207th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Audette reassigned to IceCaps
DANIEL AUDETTE HEADS TO ST. JOHN’S FROM SHERBROOKE

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have reassigned centre Daniel Audette to the IceCaps from the Sherbooke Phoenix of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Audette, 19, has spent this entire four-year, junior career with the Phoenix, collecting 27 goals and 59 points in 52 games this season.

The five-foot-nine, 188-pounder from Blainville, QC was drafted by the Canadiens in the 5th round (147th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

 

John Scott and Ryan Johnston head to Habs
MICHAEL MCCARRON REASSIGNED TO ICECAPS

The Montreal Canadiens announced today they have recalled forward/defenceman John Scott and defenceman Ryan Johnston from the IceCaps and have reassigned forward Michael McCarron to St. John’s.

Scott, 33, has skated in 27 games with St. John’s, collecting two goals, four points and 85 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, the Edmonton native registered one assist and 25 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL.

The six-foot-eight, 260-pound forward has posted five goals, 11 points and 542 penalty minutes in 285 career regular season games with the Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Coyotes.

Scott joined the Canadiens organization on January 15th along with defenceman Victor Bartley in a trade with Arizona for defenceman Jared Tinordi and forward Stefan Fournier. He was named MVP of the NHL Al-Star Game in January.

A product of the WCHA’s Michigan Tech Huskies, Scott totaled 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) in 126 games at the collegiate level.

Johnston, 24, signed a two-year, two-way contract (2015-16 to 2016-17) with the Canadiens in July. The rookie pro has nine assists in 34 games with the IceCaps.

In 38 regular season games with the Colgate University Raiders of the ECAC in 2014-15, the five-foot-10, 180-pounder led all team defensemen in assists (14) and ranked tied for first in points (15). Johnston registered five goals and 42 points in 110 regular season games in his three seasons with Colgate from 2012 to 2015.

Johnston has no NHL experience.

McCarron, the Macomb, Michigan native has collected 34 points in 53 games with the IceCaps and registered a goal and an assist in 20 games with the Canadiens in 2015-16 – his first season of professional hockey.

Despite his lengthy stay in Montreal, McCarron still sits fifth in IceCaps team scoring and first among St. John’s freshmen.

The six-foot-six, 231-pounder was selected in the first round, 25th overall by the Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Bakker back to Wheeling
SHANE BAKKER RELEASED FROM PTO

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 2, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have released forward Shane Bakker from a 25-game Professional Tryout (PTO) contract.

Bakker, a six-foot-four, 210-pounder, registered a goal and 46 penalty minutes in 11 games with the IceCaps and earlier in the season, collected six assists in 20 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.

 

Thrower returns to IceCaps
DALTON THROWER JOINS ST. JOHN’S AT MILE ONE

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 2, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have reassigned defenceman Dalton Thrower to the IceCaps from the Brampton Beast of the ECHL.

Thrower is scoreless in eight games with the IceCaps and has registered 20 penalty minutes.  The North Vancouver native has a goal, three assists and 60 penalty minutes in 29 contests with the Beast.

Game Report

The last road trip of the season didn’t go well for the IceCaps. They probably were relieved to get back to St. John’s this week and take to their own home ice for the remainder of the year.  Their first visitors? The Lehigh Valley Phantoms, whom they hadn’t faced since October in Allentown.  The Phantoms didn’t make the IceCaps homecoming too sweet, however.

The first period looked good, with both teams getting a fairly even amount of shots, and no penalties.  Goaltenders Zach Fucale and Martin Ouellette looked strong in net and turned aside more than a few good shot attempts.

Charles Hudon was the recipient of a cross-check that sent him awkwardly into the boards and he had to be helped off the ice by a trainer and a teammate, looking woozy and unsteady.  He did not return to the bench.

In the second period, Taylor Leier put a puck past Fucale in the first minute and things went downhill from there for the home team.  Tim Bozon managed to get the IceCaps on the board, thanks to a helper by Cory Ward, but the Phantoms kept coming and finding ways to get the puck into the net.

The IceCaps only took two penalties in the game, but allowed a power play goal, while the Phantoms took six penalties and blanked the St. John’s power play units.  A late period empty netter by Lehigh Valley put the IceCaps away for good.

Brett Lernout was missing from the lineup as he was called up to the Montreal Canadiens on emergency status due to Nathan Beaulieu sustaining a thumb injury.  Ben Scrivens cleared waivers and arrived in St. John’s earlier in the afternoon, but did not dress for this matchup.

The series continues tomorrow night as the Lehigh Valley Phantoms return to Mile One for the fourth and final game between these two teams.

Game Report

It was the last game of a long road trip – the final road trip of the regular season.  And it will likely leave the IceCaps with a bitter taste in their mouth on a long flight back to St. John’s.

Not many positives can be taken from this game.  The first period looked hopeful with no penalties taken, shots even at six each.  Newcomer Tom Parisi had some decent shifts, and players put some good shots on Antoine Bibeau.

But then in the second period, the revolving door to the penalty box began – as did the goals against.  The IceCaps took eight trips to the box in total, and the Marlies managed to score on three of those man-advantage opportunities.  John Scott took a four-minute penalty for spearing which kicked off the power play goals for Toronto.

Gabriel Dumont left the ice for a bit in the second period after getting hit from behind and going awkwardly into the glass.  He would reappear in the third period.  Eddie Pasquale did the best he could on a night where he wasn’t getting much support, but the Marlies kept peppering him with pucks.

The IceCaps now have a quick turnaround as they fly back to St. John’s and get ready for a back-to-back series this weekend against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Game Report

After riding a high from last night’s hard-fought team win, the IceCaps then rode a bus across the border to Toronto, Ontario and arrived in the early morning hours at their hotel only to wake up early and hit the ice for an afternoon matinee.  They faced a rested, refreshed Marlies team at the Air Canada Centre and their fatigue showed.

Brett Lernout actually got things started on a positive note with his second goal of the season, assisted by Nikita Scherbak and Charles Hudon. And then St. John’s reverted to slow, sloppy, tired play and unsteady goaltending and found themselves down 3-1 by the end of the first period.

Adding insult to injury, the IceCaps then began taking penalty after penalty in the second frame. Thankfully the penalty killers stood strong yet again and denied the Marlies on every man advantage.  Bud Holloway got his team one goal closer to a comeback by banking in a wide open rebound.  He was assisted by Gabriel Dumont and Brandon McNally.

Hudon then scored his 26th goal of the season about halfway through the third period to bring St. John’s to within one goal of the Marlies.  But Brendan Leipsic deflated any hope the IceCaps had with a late-period goal against Zach Fucale to seal a victory for Toronto.

The IceCaps have some rest and practice to look forward to over the next couple of days before they visit Ricoh Coliseum on Tuesday for their last tilt against the Marlies for this season.

Game Report

IceCaps fans watching tonight’s game may have thought they were experiencing deja vu. Charles Hudon scored first for St. John’s again, assisted by Nikita Scherbak, tying the game early in the first period at 1-1.

In the second period, the IceCaps once again opened up the scoring with two goals by Brandon McNally, and a goal by Morgan Ellis.  Cory Ward added two more assists to his season tally.  Penalties came and went, but the penalty killing unit stood tall and denied every Rochester attempt to put pucks through Eddie Pasquale.

Then, in the final frame, Max Friberg put the IceCaps up 5-1 – just like they started the period on Wednesday night.  And just like the previous game, that’s when the Americans started to mount a comeback, scoring two quick goals.  But Pasquale stood his ground, despite being peppered with 28 shots in the 3rd period, and the IceCaps took this one decisively 5-3.

It was a valiant team win by a group of hockey players who have faced some devastating losses over the last week of the season.  The win should give them a much-needed boost of confidence going into Saturday’s afternoon matinee against the Toronto Marlies at the Air Canada Centre.

Game Report

The theme for the IceCaps lately seems to be win a game, then lose a game.  It was another tight matchup with the Hershey Bears for this afternoon game, but a late goal in the waning minutes of play gave the visitors a tally in the win column.

Hershey went up early in the game but in the second period captain Gabriel Dumont beat Justin Peters after being set up by Morgan Ellis and Bud Holloway on the power play.  The teams continued to trade goals, and next up for the IceCaps was the second goal of the season for John Scott who slid home a rebound to tie the game.

Eddie Pasquale looked mostly good in net, but was a bit of a spectator on the second goal against.  Penalties also became an issue with St. John’s taking three of four unsportsmanlike conduct minors.

The IceCaps now head back out on the road for the final trip of the regular season, starting with a tilt against the Comets in Utica on Friday night.

Game Report

This was the kind of game the IceCaps needed as they push to stay in the playoff race.  It only took 39 seconds after puck drop for Max Friberg to pot the game’s first goal, assisted by Gabriel Dumont and Darren Dietz.

Next it was Shane Bakker’s turn to light the lamp, getting his first goal of the season. Andrew Yogan and John Scott assisted on Bakker’s goal, the third consecutive game with a helper for Yogan.

Dumont then scored a goal of his own in the waning seconds of the first period and the IceCaps headed to the dressing room up 3-0 at first intermission.

Penalty minutes started being served in the second period when Zach Stortini went hard at Morgan Ellis behind the net and Bakker dropped the gloves to defend his teammate.  The Senators were able to tally two goals in the second period, but Charles Hudon answered with a power play goal and Eddie Pasquale kept Binghamton out of the net for the rest of the game.

The Icecaps face the Binghamton Senators again on Wednesday night to finish out the back-to-back series.

Game Report

It had been almost a week since the last time the IceCaps took the ice for a game.  After finally grabbing a win in Syracuse at the end of a disappointing road trip, the team had a few days to rest and practice before welcoming the Albany Devils to the Mile One Centre.

The first period was rather sluggish, with St. John’s only getting four shots on goal.  Only one penalty, against Gabriel Dumont, was called in the opening frame – a quiet 20 minutes to be sure.

The second period, however, was the polar opposite.  Charles Hudon scored his 19th goal of the season during a power play, assisted by Dumont and Nikita Scherbak.  The goals came fast and furious after that, with Alexander Ranger and Brandon McNally both scoring within another minute or so.

Then things got pretty intense.  Five fights were recorded in the period, with Mark MacMillan and John Scott both getting thrown out with game misconducts.  Scherbak was the victim of a dirty hit from behind which tossed him toward the visiting bench and into the stanchion.  Scott took exception and landed a flurry of solid left jabs onto the face and head of Ben Thomson.

The Devils managed to get one goal on the board in the third period, but the IceCaps didn’t let them get any farther in the scoring race.  It was a solid team win to kick off this home stand as they try to make a push toward the playoffs down the stretch.

The Icecaps face the Albany Devils again on Saturday night for the second game of the back-to-back and the final game in the season series.

Game Report

It’s a story IceCaps fans are quite familiar with at this point: St. John’s gives up a goal early in the first period, then another.  They take too many penalties, the power play can’t convert, and they finally turn on the jets in the third period when it’s too late to make a comeback.  And it’s a story we have to tell again after tonight’s game.

It only took two and a half minutes for the opposition to score on the IceCaps this time.  Soon after, John Scott got into his first full fight as an IceCap and things went downhill from there.  Mark MacMillan got called for a high-sticking double minor at the end of the first period, giving the Comets about three minutes of power play time to open the second period.

Former Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust earned two points on the evening for two consecutive assists.  Jeremy Gregoire also dropped the gloves, as did Charles Hudon – with Malcolm Subban.

A few minutes into the third period, Bud Holloway found the back of the net on the power play.  Nikita Scherbak and Morgan Ellis assisted on the goal.  The IceCaps scrambled and pressured the Comets throughout the rest of the third but goaltender Richard Bachman stood tall and didn’t allow any more pucks to get through.

Captain Gabriel Dumont returned to the IceCaps lineup for this game.  Mac Bennett was recalled from the Brampton Beast before the game, while Ellis and Michael McCarron were called up to the Montreal Canadiens immediately following the game.

The Icecaps finish up their road trip with a rematch in Syracuse with the Crunch Saturday night.
