Recap – Americans vs Bulldogs: Pateryn With the Lone Goal, Amerks Drop Dogs

By Dale Lamontagne, Hamilton Bulldogs Correspondent, Bulldogs Hockey Report

HAMILTON, ON — The Hamilton Bulldogs entered Friday’s contest against the Rochester Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) having lost their last match on Wednesday against the Adirondack Flames in overtime by a score of 5-4. Entering Friday’s matchup, the Bulldogs sit second in the North Division with a record of 28-21-9, good enough for 65 points. Rochester, however, is last in the North with a record of 24-29-6, for 54 points.

Friday’s game at FirstOntario Centre, however, had a similar outcome just like Wednesday’s tilt, with Hamilton losing, again. The Americans were able to defeat the ‘Dogs by a score of 3-1.

Game Rundown

The Americans saw their first solid scoring opportunity eight minutes into the first as the Amerks’ shot the puck at Bulldogs goaltender Joey MacDonald and it squeaked right behind him, almost over the red line. But defenceman Davis Drewiske cleared the puck. Close call.

Towards the end of the first period, an odd situation occurred. A sheet of glass on the Americans bench shattered and delayed the game for about 15 minutes. Rochester’s backup goaltender Tim Boron nearly took a puck to the head and left briefly to clean the glass off himself.

Moments later, the game entered the first intermission scoreless.

At the 7:35 mark in the second period, TJ Hensick scored a goal but it was waved off because it was kicked in. The play was not reviewed and the game remained scoreless.

The second period picked up it’s intensity and saw the Bulldogs direct eight shots on goal (for a two period total of 23.) The Bulldogs came close to scoring on their power-play towards the end of the period, but time expired. The ‘Dogs entered the third with 40 seconds remaining on the man advantage.

The Americans started the third period on a good note as they would take the first lead of the game, thanks to Evan Rankin who squeezed the puck by Joey MacDonald on a 2-on-1 pass.

Seconds after the Americans goal the Bulldogs tied the game after a bullet of a shot from Greg Pateryn at the blueline which went through traffic in front past Matt Hackett.

The Americans struck again to take their second lead of the night with Chad Ruhwedel netting the goal after Joey MacDonald saved a point shot, but created a rebound and was found out of position. That was Ruhwedel’s his eighth goal of the season.

The Americans sealed the deal with an empty net goal with seven  seconds left in the period.

HAMILTON, ON — The Hamilton Bulldogs (22-18-6) entered Friday’s contest on a six-game winning streak and they were looking to extend that streak to seven games with yet another game  against the Iowa Wild (17-29-2), the American Hockey League affiliate of the Minnesota Wild. But the Bulldogs could not muster up a win, and the Wild would take this one by a score of 5-3.

Game Rundown

The Bulldogs opened the scoring with four minutes to go in the first period, thanks to Daniel Carr who scored his tenth of the season after receiving a pass from Sven Andrighetto in front of Darcy Kuemper, beating him over the shoulder to make it 1-0.

The Carr goal would be the lone tally of the period and the Bulldogs would enter the intermission up 1-0.

In the second period, Jarred Tinordi extended the Bulldogs lead to 2-0 with a point shot right off the faceoff. That was his first goal of the 2014-15 AHL season.

Shortly after the Tinordi goal, the Wild got on the board with Jonathan Blum scoring from the slot, beating Bulldogs netminder Joey MacDonald.

With only two minutes to go in the middle frame, Zach Phillips scored for Iowa to tie the game, 2-2, beating MacDonald.  After two periods of play, the Bulldogs and Wild were tied 2-2.

Just a minute and 29 seconds into the final period, the Wild took a 3-2 lead with Brady Brassart sniping a shot, top corner past MacDonald.

At the 13:41 mark, Charles Hudon fed Carr with a nice pass down low, where he scored to tie the game.  It was Carr’s second goal of the game and 11th of the season.

Mid-way through the period, the Wild took their second lead of the game, with Kurtis Gabriel shooting the puck top corner right over MacDonald’s glove side. It was a goal MacDonald would like to have back but it was one of those nights.

The Wild sealed the deal with 58 seconds left scoring an empty net goal.

With this loss, it now ends the Bulldogs winning streak at six games. It was a nice run but the Bulldogs need to gear up for the weekend where they take on Lake Erie on Saturday and then the Wild again on Tuesday.

Bulldogs Welcome Back Tinordi vs Griffins

By Dale Lamontagne, Hamilton Bulldogs Correspondent, Bulldogs Hockey Report

bulldogs-Tinordi

HAMILTON, ON — The Hamilton Bulldogs will continue their season long seven game homestand tonight at the FirstOntario Centre as they play host to the Grand Rapids Griffins, the AHL affiliate of the Detroit Red Wings at 7:30 p.m.

I took in the morning skate at FOC. Here are some notes to get you set for the game…

The Bulldogs enter tonight’s contest with a record of 16-17-6 and currently sit 11th in the Western Conference. The Griffins have a record of 19-13-4 and sit 7th with a 19-13-3-1 record.

The big news out of Hamilton this morning is the return of defenceman Jarred Tinordi, who will slide back into the lineup tonight. Tinordi was injured in a fight against the Utica Comets last Friday and was out for three games due to facial and head injuries.

Joey MacDonald, who was originally supposed to start in goal for the Bulldogs this evening, is now up with the Montreal Canadiens with Carey Price injured day-to-day. So you can expect Mike Condon to get the start in goal.

I will have all your live game updates over at Twitter (@Dale_Bulldogs) and a post-game blog following the match here at Bulldogs Hockey Report. Stay tuned.

HAMILTON, ONT — After losing back-to-back games to the Adirondack Flames last weekend, the Hamilton Bulldogs look to rebound with a two-game set in St. John’s against the IceCaps tonight and Friday.

The Bulldogs  have gone 4-6-2 thus far this season and have struggled to win at home, but are better on the road this year. The ‘Dogs are 3-2-0 on the road and have scored 16 goals, accumulating 6 points. While at home at the FirstOntario Centre, Hamilton has four points and a record of 1-4-2.

The IceCaps have struggled to string along wins this season, as they’re 3-8-4 on the young AHL season, and hold a 2-2-2 record on home ice.

The good news for the Bulldogs tonight, forward Eric Tangradi, who missed 7 games with injury is back in the lineup tonight, while Rene Bourque will make his Bulldogs’ debut tonight after being sent down earlier this week by the Montreal Canadiens.

According to Bulldogs play-by-play guy Matt Holmes, Christian Thomas and Jack Nevins will not play tonight as they’re out with injuries.

HAMILTON, ONT — The Hamilton Bulldogs took on the Adirondack Flames for their first-ever meeting tonight in front of 2,284 fans at FirstOntario Centre. The Bulldogs entered tonight’s match having won their last game on Tuesday in front of 13,000 loud school kids for the annual school day game, by dropping the Rochester Americans by a score of 6-1. But tonight, the ‘Dogs were burnt by the Flames by a score of 3-1.

GAME RUNDOWN

The Bulldogs had the games first and only goal of the first period, as ‘Dogs leading scorer with nine points, Charles Hudon, fed T.J. Hensick a nice pass right in the slot where he tucked away the puck past Adirondack Flames goaltender Brad Thiessen‘s glove side.

The Bulldogs took three minor penalties in the opening frame, but were able to successfully kill the minor infractions.

The remainder of the period would see typical back and forth play, and notably a nice physical presence from the Bulldogs blueline, specifically from Greg Pateryn, who played a good game on the backend.

The second period would go scoreless, but there were multiple chances at both ends of the ice, however both goaltenders would make the saves.

Five minutes into the third period, Hudon had an early chance to extend the ‘Dogs lead on a breakaway opportunity, but he shot the puck off the post.

Seconds after the Hudon chance, the Flames got their first goal of the game after David Wolf one timed a shot that beat Hamilton’s goaltender Joey MacDonald past his glove hand.

With only five minutes to go in the third frame, the Flames took the lead as Turner Elson sniped a wicked shot top shelf.

In the final two minutes of the game, the Flames extended their lead to 3-1 after Bryce Van Brabant tucked away the lose puck in MacDonald’s crease.

The Bulldogs drop the first game of a back-to-back to the Flames.

Hamilton is back in action tomorrow as they host the Flames for the second game of this weekend set.

Stay tuned to Bulldogs Hockey Report as I will bring you coverage of the morning skate Saturday at 10 a.m. from FirstOntario Centre.

Bulldogs Drop Second Game in a Row to Rampage, 5-2

(Mandatory Credit: Brandon Taylor / Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club)
(Mandatory Credit: Brandon Taylor / Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club)

By Dale Lamontagne,  Hamilton Bulldogs Correspondent, Bulldogs Hockey Report

HAMILTON, ONT — The Hamilton Bulldogs entered this afternoon’s matinee having lost their last game to the same opponent, the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday, and tonight was no different. The Rampage sunk the Bulldogs by a score 5-2 in front of 2,299 fans. With the loss, the Bulldogs have yet to win a game on home ice this season.

GAME RUNDOWN

The Bulldogs would find themselves down a goal after the first period of play, as Rampage forward Connor Brickley would net his second goal of the 2014-15 AHL season after he came flying down the wing, blasting the puck by Joey MacDonald‘s blocker side.

The power-play struggles continued for the Bulldogs in the first period. They had three opportunities on the man advantage but failed to get anything going as they could not get back in the offensive zone after the Rampage cleared the puck.

The first fight of the game came at the 8:09 minute mark, with Jack Nevins and Shane O’Brien dropping the gloves as Nevins laid a huge check on the veteran AHL defenceman O’Brien.

The Bulldogs started the second period with some good speed and they had multiple chances, but it wouldn’t end the way they wanted as the Rampage extended their lead to 4-1.

But the Bulldogs scored their first goal of the game as Christian Thomas chipped a shot that bounces off a defenseman and over goaltender Dan Ellis.

Shortly after the ‘Dogs got on the board, Jonathan Racine hit Charles Hudon from behind, causing the rookie forward to need some assistance getting off the ice. Hudon stayed on the bench and did not leave to the dressing room, while Racine got a 5-minute major and a game misconduct for the hit.

The Rampage took the lead on 4-on-4, as Rocco Grimaldi scored the goal and then seconds later, McFarland ripped a shot past MacDonald after he flew down the wing.

The Rampage fourth goal of the game was also a nice one, as Wilson came down the wing and chipped a shot over MacDonald’s shoulder for a nice top shelf goal.

Towards the end of the period, Finley, Dowell and Nevins dropped the gloves with a few Rampage players causing a min-line brawl.

For the third period, the Bulldogs would score their second and only goal of the game with a nice point shot from Gabriel Dumont and Rampage goaltender Dan Ellis did not see the shot as he was screened.

The remainder of the period would see back and forth action, but the Rampage scored thier final goal of the game in the empty net. Wilson was credited with the goal and the Rampage would take the game by a score of 5-2.

Game Notes

Head coach Sylvain Lefebvre said froward Eric Tangradi is out with an upper-body injury and is considered day-to-day, while Magnus Nygren is has a lower-body injury and will be re-evaluated tomorrow.

Next Game

The Hamilton Bulldogs will travel to Buffalo to take on the Rochester Americans at FirstNiagara Centre.  The Bulldogs next home game will be also against Rochester at FirstOntario Centre for the Bulldogs annual school day game.

Bulldogs Win Big in Toronto, Defeat Marlies 4-1

By Dale Lamontagne, Hamilton Bulldogs Correspondent, Bulldogs Hockey Report

TORONTO, ONT — The Hamilton Bulldogs travelled down the 403 to Toronto to take on the Marlies for the second time this season. The Marlies spoiled the Bulldogs home opener at FirstOntario Centre exactly one week ago and tonight it was the Bulldogs with the victory, defeating the Marlies by a score of 4-1.

GAME RUNDOWN

In the first period, the Hamilton Bulldogs would take the first lead of the game,  as recently-recalled Nathan Beaulieu would score his first AHL goal of the season. Michael Bournival, who was also sent down this week by the Montreal Canadiens, was credited with the primary assist after he made a nice feed to Beaulieu.  The young defenceman tucked the puck behind Marlies goaltender Antonie Bibeau.

The Bulldogs would see two power-play opportunities in the first period, but they struggled to get out of their own zone and to create scoring chances in the offensive zone. On top of that, the Marlies also had several chances on the penalty-kill. To be more specific, they had more chances down a man than the Bulldogs did up a body.

Hamilton goaltender Joey MacDonald faced 10 shots on goal in the opening period, and he made at least four big gloves saves to keep the Bulldogs up 1-0. MacDonald played a key period for the ‘Dogs, which allowed them to enter the first intermission up 1-0.

In the middle frame, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 3-0, with goals coming from Sven Andrighetto and Eric Tangradi. Andrighetto scored the Bulldogs second goal with a nice top shelf snipe two minutes into the period, and Tangradi scored his first as a Bulldog’ on the power-play, after he chipped the puck over Bibeau’s right shoulder.

MacDonald continued his strong play in the second period, and made two more nifty gloves saves, keeping Hamilton in the lead.

Towards the end of the period, both the Marlies and Bulldogs started to get under each others skin as there were multiple scrums with players ready to drop the gloves.

The remainder of the period saw a lot of back and forth play between the two clubs. The Bulldogs managed to outshoot the Marlies 11-5 in the second with a much stronger period offensively and defensively.

Moments after the third period started, Marlies forward Sam Carrick ran over MacDonald, causing his helmet to fly off his head. MacDonald showed some discomfort and was helped by the trainer, but was fine to continue the game.

The Marlies scored their first and only goal of the game on the power-play. Greg McKegg scored his first of the season as hhis inital shot snuck past MacDonalds glove side and into the net.

Charles Hudon then went off  moments after the the Marlies power-play goal for slashing and this is when the game started to pick up. However, the Bulldogs killed off the minor with very little issue.

The game would now get intense with the Marlies producing multiple chances, but MacDonald was able to shut the door and Tangardi scored his second goal of the game with the empty net. 4-1 final for the Bulldogs who lost back-to-back games last weekend.

The season series between the 403 rivals is now at one a piece with 10 more games on tap this season.

The Bulldogs are back in action tomorrow as they play host to the San Antonio  Rampage at FirstOntario Centre.
