Pateryn Leads Bulldogs to OT Win Over Marlies

HAMILTON, ONT — The Hamilton Bulldogs entered tonight’s contest against North Division rivals, the Toronto Marlies, hoping to find their way back to the win column as they suffered a 3-2 loss to the league leading Utica Comets on Wednesday.  They did just that, taking down the Marlies 2-1 on home ice.

GAME RUNDOWN 

The thing with these Bulldogs – Marlies games is, they play each other 12 times this season, because well,  it’s AHL hockey and they’re just a quick 30 minute bus ride down the highway. But, one thing is for sure, each game they play is exciting and it’s a ton of fun to watch – and tonight was no different.

Although there was no score after the first period of play, we saw a ton of action, that reassured us that the Bulldogs and Marlies don’t really like each other.

David Broll and Jack Nevins dropped the glove 15 minutes into the opening frame. I would say the fight would draw an even card, after both players threw multiple punches one after another.

It’s worth noting that Mike Condon made a handful of easy glove saves, which kept the game scoreless.

The second period would see its first goal of the game, but from the opposing Marlies squad.

David Booth, who was sent down to the AHL from the Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday for conditioning purposes, scored his first goal of the season as he buried a shot that came off the backboards on the power-play.

Towards the end of the period, a scary incident took place as Jake Dowell hit Marlies defenceman Viktor Loov directly in the head, with him colliding into the boards.

Sam Carrick stuck up for his player and dropped the gloves with Dowell.

Loov went directly to the dressing room, but then came back out for the final few minutes of the game and he appeared to be okay.

The third period saw the Bulldogs tie the game on the power-play, as Charles Hudon blasted a shot from the point, which beat Christopher Gibson on the blocker side.

With about five minutes left in the third period, the Bulldogs scored, but it was waived off immediately as Eric Tangradi went to the box for goaltender interference. No goal, and it was the right call.

At the end of 60-minutes of play, the Bulldogs and Marlies remained tied 1-1, so in came the overtime.

With 2:22 left in overtime, defenceman Greg Pateryn scored the game winner with a helluva slap shot, that beat Gibson on the blocker side.

Bulldogs take the game 2-1, to improve to a 7-8-2 record.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Sunday, as they travel down the QEW to take on the Toronto Marlies for the fourth time this season.

Official Release: Bulldogs Name Gabriel Dumont 13th Captain in Team History

HAMILTON, ONT. – The Hamilton Bulldogs Hockey Club announced today forward Gabriel Dumont has been named the 13th captain in team history. The club also named four alternate captains, including forward Jake Dowell and defenceman Greg Pateryn for home games, as well as defencemen Davis Drewiske and Joe Finley for road games.

Dumont, 24, is the longest-serving member of the Bulldogs’ active roster. Heading into his fifth full season with the team, the Ville Degelis, Que. native has played all of his 252 career American Hockey League regular season games with Hamilton, over which time he has amassed 109 points (53 goals, 56 assists) and 328 penalty minutes. In 31 career AHL playoff games with the ‘Dogs, he has collected 11 points (eight goals, three assists) and 18 penalty minutes. The 5-10, 184-pound forward was an alternate captain for the Bulldogs for the 2013-14 season.

The club’s four alternates also bring a demonstrated history of leadership. Dowell, 29, in his first season with the Bulldogs, was an AHL captain with the Rockford IceHogs (2009-10) and the Iowa Wild (2013-14). Drewiske, 29, in his second season with Hamilton, was captain of the University of Wisconsin Badgers in 2007-08 and was also a member of the 2011-12 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings. Finley, 27, in his first season with the ‘Dogs, has played five professional seasons and was an AHL alternate captain with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in 2013-14. Pateryn, 24, in his third season with the Bulldogs, was an alternate captain with the University of Michigan Wolverines (2011-12) as well as with the Bulldogs last season.

MONTREAL, QUE. – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have assigned forwards Sven Andrighetto, Jake Dowell and Gabriel Dumont as well as defencemen Davis Drewiske and Greg Pateryn to the Bulldogs.

These assignments bring the ‘Dogs training camp roster to 18 forwards, 11 defencemen and three goaltenders. The five players assigned today will report to Hamilton, but won’t join the team for the pre-season games in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The Bulldogs play their first pre-season game tonight when they visit the St. John’s IceCaps at Joe Byrne Memorial Stadium in Grand Falls-Windsor, N.L. at 5:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast live on AM900 CHML.

Jake Dowell: A Testament to Character

MONTREAL, QC. — Assembling an AHL team is a little different from doing the same thing at the NHL-level.  Yes, each AHL franchise is a business and needs to be competitive to draw fans but the primary purpose of the team is to develop prospects.  So each player must be on a path to the NHL? Well, not necessarily.

To help prepare prospects for a successful transition to the NHL, a competent coaching staff who are superb teachers (something desperately missing in Hamilton)  are required, as well as character veterans who can demonstrate to younger teammates just how to be a professional.

Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin added one of those character players when he signed Jake Dowell to a one-year deal. With 157 NHL games and 305 AHL games under his belt, Dowell will be able to provide the leadership role both on and off the ice as well mentoring his teammates. Last season Dowell won the Fred T Hunt Memorial Award as “the AHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey.” 

Dowell was a teammate of Canadiens defenseman Davis Drewiske when both played with the University of Wisconsin Badgers in the NCAA. Dowell won a Frozen Four championship in 2006 with the Badgers. Here are Dowell’s career regular season statistics.

But a testament to his character is found outside the stats sheet. Dowell has a unique family dynamic and is carrying a substantial burden. Dowell lost his father to Huntington’s disease during the AHL All Star break last season.

E:60, ESPN’s newsmagazine profiled Jake Dowell and his family’s struggle with Huntington’s. Dowell said, “It’s just a scary thing that you have to just absolutely be ready to accept your fate either way. It’s basically a flip of a coin.” Watch the video below.

Bulldogs Sign Forward Jake Dowell to One-Year Contract

MONTREAL, QUEBEC – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Bulldogs have signed forward Jake Dowell to a one-year American Hockey League contract for the 2014-2015 season.

Dowell split 2013-2014 between the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild and its AHL affiliate, the Iowa Wild. In one regular season game with Minnesota, the 29-year-old recorded no points and no penalty minutes. In 57 regular season games with Iowa, the Eau Claire, Wisconsin native registered 19 points (seven goals, 12 assists) and 56 penalty minutes.

A veteran of eight professional seasons, Dowell has participated in 462 NHL and AHL regular season games combined. In 305 career AHL regular season games with the Iowa Wild, Houston Aeros, Rockford IceHogs and Norfolk Admirals, the 6’0”, 204-pound forward has compiled 93 points (33 goals, 60 assists) and 386 penalty minutes. In 157 career NHL regular season games with the Minnesota Wild, Dallas Stars and Chicago Blackhawks, he has recorded 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) and 133 penalty minutes. In 2013-2014, he was the recipient of the AHL’s Fred T. Hunt Memorial Award as the player who best exemplified qualities of sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey, voted on by the league’s players, coaches and media.

Before turning pro, Dowell played four seasons with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s University of Wisconsin Badgers. In 159 career games with Wisconsin between 2003 and 2007, he recorded 90 points (42 goals, 48 assists) and 218 penalty minutes. As an amateur, he won an NCAA national championship with Wisconsin in 2006 and an International Ice Hockey Federation World Under-20 Championship with the United States in 2004.

Dowell was originally selected by the Blackhawks in the fifth round (140th overall) in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.
