Game Report

After a few days of travel and practice, the IceCaps came into Albany tonight looking for a win after dropping their last two to Binghamton. Charles Hudon was back in the lineup after missing one game due to injury.

But less than five minutes into the game it felt like deja vu all over again as the Devils got on the board first.  By the midway point of the second period they held a 3-0 lead over the IceCaps, and the visiting team was looking unorganized and frustrated.

Coach Sylvain Lefebvre must have lit a fire under the team in the second intermission as they came out blazing in the third period, with Hudon getting St. John’s on the board just over a minute into the frame.  Thirty seconds later it was Tim Bozon’s turn to put a puck past Yann Danis – his first goal of the season.

The IceCaps continued to pressure throughout the third, but in the final minute allowed Albany to get an empty net goal.  With just three seconds remaining Bozon got the IceCaps within one goal, but again it was too late for the full comeback and St. John’s dropped their third consecutive game.

Victor Bartley was called up to the Montreal Canadiens the day before this game, which then led to Travis Brown getting called up to the IceCaps from the Brampton Beast. Brown did not play in this game, however.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Utica for a game against the Comets on Saturday night.

Game Report

After defeating the Syracuse Crunch twice last week, including the game in which Zach Fucale earned his first professional shutout, the IceCaps looked to repeat history when they came into the War Memorial Arena tonight.

The first period was buzzing with activity, as the Crunch got on the board just under two minutes into the game.  Immediately following their goal, Shane Bakker dropped the gloves with Brian Hart.  Soon afterwards Syracuse took the first penalty of the night and the IceCaps tied the game on the ensuing power play, thanks to a goal by John Scott.

The Crunch managed to get a go-ahead goal before the end of the frame, and the score stalled at 2-1 through the second period as well.  The IceCaps power play units got plenty of ice time as the Crunch continued to take penalties, and another fight broke out – this time between Brett Lernout and Mike Angelidis.

Finally, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Mike McCarron tallied another power play goal to tie the game.  The teams exchanged penalties during the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood strong and forced a shootout.  It took five rounds before a goal was scored, and it was McCarron again to win the game for St. John’s.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

St. John’s IceCaps Media Release

SPRINGFIELD, MA — The American Hockey League announced today that St. John’s IceCaps goaltender Zachary Fucale has been selected as the CCM/AHL Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 14, 2016.

Fucale won each of his three starts last week while stopping 107 of 111 shots, good for a 1.32 goals-against average and a .964 save percentage.

St. John’s was outshot by a combined total of 111-60 in Fucale’s three outings but put together its first three-game winning streak of the season thanks to the rookie goaltender’s efforts. Fucale began the week by earning the first shutout of his professional career, a 39-save performance in the IceCaps’ 4-0 win over Syracuse on Tuesday. He came back the next night and made 36 stops as St. John’s defeated the Crunch in overtime, 4-3. And on Saturday night, Fucale shut down the league-leading Toronto Marlies, making 32 saves in a 3-1 victory.

A second-round choice (36th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Fucale has improved to 13-11-3 with a 3.05 GAA and a .906 save percentage in 30 appearances for St. John’s this season. The 20-year-old rookie from Rosemere, Que., won a Memorial Cup championship with Halifax (QMJHL) in 2013 and a gold medal with Canada at the 2015 World Junior Championships.

In recognition of his achievement, Fucale will be presented with an etched crystal award prior to an upcoming IceCaps home game.

Game Report

The most memorable moments of the night both came from Bud Holloway: a desperation skate save in the dying minutes of the game with the IceCaps net empty and a kiss that he planted on the helmet of linemate Charles Hudon when the Kiss Cam featured the duo on the score clock during a stoppage of play.

It was that kind of night.

The Senators took advantage of an IceCaps team who got into Binghamton in the wee hours of the morning. The BSens came out of the gate strong scoring just 1:20 into the opening frame. The Senators went up by two on their first power-play of the game seven minutes into the game.

To say the game was physical is putting it mildly. Chippy play, scrums after whistles, and multiple scraps between Stefan Fournier and Guillaume Lepine. Finally, late in the second period, the IceCaps began to show some life after Sven Andrighetto and Fournier each potted a goal.

The momentum had seemingly swung in the visiting team’s direction, but they couldn’t fully surmount a comeback to tie the game. Zach Fucale held off the Binghamton offense through the final horn, but the Senators were able to edge out the IceCaps 3-2.

The IceCaps will start the new year and complete their road trip on Saturday when they meet the Utica Comets.

Game Report

The IceCaps got right back to work this afternoon with another matinee matchup against the Toronto Marlies.  After spending the first few minutes of the game with both teams testing each other out, action started to pick up when the IceCaps drew the game’s first power play.  Pasquale’s best save of the period came with just under 7 minutes left in the period as Viktor Loov curled around in the zone, found some empty space and wired a shot but Pasquale flashed the leather. Just over a minute and a half later, Zach Hyman opened the scoring for the Marlies as he tapped in a loose puck at the goal mouth. As the period wound down, Bournival scored a power play goal to tie the game, his first of the season, with assists from Gabriel Dumont and Darren Dietz.

The IceCaps started the second period by killing off the remainder of a Mac Bennett penalty he took at the end of the first period.  After the Marlies went up by a goal once again, the IceCaps really started to pick up the physical play.

With 12 minutes left in the second period, the IceCaps only had 2 shots on goal and the Marlies had made it 3-1 on a goal from Justin Holl off the ensuing faceoff. Under a minute later, Charles Hudon fed Bud Holloway who sent a beautiful saucer pass over to Joel Hanley who pushed the puck past Ray Emery.

Early in the final frame, Bud Holloway tied things up at 3-3.  The IceCaps came out this period far more engaged, looking like the momentum they had at the end of the previous period had carried over. Jacob de la Rose potted his second goal of the season to give the IceCaps their first lead of the game.

The Marlies applied pressure throughout the third, looking to even things up on the scoreboard but Eddie Pasquale and the St. John’s defense were clicking.  After a Toronto timeout with just under two minutes remaining, the Marlies tied things up off a point shot from Rinat Valiev.  The IceCaps didn’t give up and 50 seconds later Gabriel Dumont managed to squeak a shot through Emery to make it 5-4 for the visiting team and seal the comeback victory.

Earlier in the day Tim Bozon, Angelo Miceli, and Dalton Thrower were sent down to the Brampton Beast.  During the game, the news came out that Mark Barberio had been recalled to the Montreal Canadiens. The IceCaps continue their road trip on Wednesday night with a game against the Rochester Amerks to be played in Buffalo’s First Niagara Center.

Game Report

After a disappointing loss to the Rochester Americans last night, the IceCaps looked to right the ship when they faced the Amerks again tonight.  Shots on goal were kept on more of an even keel this night, until the third period when the IceCaps seemed to run out of gas.

The opening frame was played quietly in terms of offense, but the penalty box was active during the first 20 minutes yet again.  Mark Barberio, Angelo Miceli, and Brett Lernout all found themselves serving minors.

Captain Gabriel Dumont got the home team on the board first, assisted by Jeremy Gregoire and Jacob de la Rose.  That’s points in two consecutive games for JDLR after returning from injury.  The Amerks and IceCaps then traded a couple of goals, with Stefan Fournier scoring for St. John’s.

The third period was all Rochester.  The IceCaps were pinned in their own zone for minutes at a time, eventually resulting in a game-tying goal by Tim Schaller which would end up forcing overtime.  The top line of Miceli, Mike McCarron, and Bud Holloway started the 3-on-3 OT, but Jason Akeson sniped the puck past Pasquale just over a minute into the extra minutes.

The IceCaps return to the ice on Tuesday night when the Albany Devils come to St. John’s for a back-to-back series.
