A number of callups, reassignments , and PTO/ATO updates have occurred betwee the Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps in the past 48 hours.  Listed below is a summary of all roster news and information.

IceCaps sign Bourque to ATO
SIMON BOURQUE JOINS TEAM FROM RIMOUSKI

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have signed defenceman Simon Bourque to a 25-Game Amateur Tryout contract (ATO).

Bourque, 19, has spent his entire three-year Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) career with the Rimouski Oceanic. In 2015-16, the six-foot-one, 184-pounder scored 12 goals and 46 points in 66 games.

The Longueuil, QC native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 6th round (177th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

 

de la Rose returns to St. John’s
JACOB DE LA ROSE JOINS ICECAPS AT HOME

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Earlier today the Montreal Canadiens reassigned forward Jacob de la Rose to the IceCaps.

The 20-year-old registered an assist in 22 games with the Canadiens this season and has collected four goals and 11 points in 30 games with the IceCaps.

The Arvika, Sweden native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 2nd round (34th overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Yogan released from PTO
ANDREW YOGAN HEADS BACK TO CINCINNATI

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have released left-winger Andrew Yogan from a 25-game Professional Tryout contract (PTO).

The 24-year-old registered a goal and five points in 15 games with St. John’s. Yogan collected 40 points in 32 games with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones this season, after previous stints in 2015-16 with the American Hockey League’s Syracuse Crunch (two goals in four games) and Iowa Wild (four points in 16 games).

The six-foot-three, 205-pound native of Coral Springs, FL was drafted in the fourth round, 100th overall, by the New York Rangers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

 

IceCaps Sign Addison to ATO
JEREMIAH ADDISON HEADS TO THE ROCK

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have signed left-winger Jeremiah Addison to a 25-Game Amateur Tryout contract (ATO).

Addison, 19, spent the past two seasons with the Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and previous to that skated with the Saginaw Spirit for two campaigns. In 2015-16, the six-foot, 189-pounder scored 27 goals and 56 points in 66 games.

The Brampton, ON native was drafted by the Canadiens in the 7th round (207th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Audette reassigned to IceCaps
DANIEL AUDETTE HEADS TO ST. JOHN’S FROM SHERBROOKE

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have reassigned centre Daniel Audette to the IceCaps from the Sherbooke Phoenix of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL).

Audette, 19, has spent this entire four-year, junior career with the Phoenix, collecting 27 goals and 59 points in 52 games this season.

The five-foot-nine, 188-pounder from Blainville, QC was drafted by the Canadiens in the 5th round (147th overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

 

John Scott and Ryan Johnston head to Habs
MICHAEL MCCARRON REASSIGNED TO ICECAPS

The Montreal Canadiens announced today they have recalled forward/defenceman John Scott and defenceman Ryan Johnston from the IceCaps and have reassigned forward Michael McCarron to St. John’s.

Scott, 33, has skated in 27 games with St. John’s, collecting two goals, four points and 85 penalty minutes. Earlier this season, the Edmonton native registered one assist and 25 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Arizona Coyotes of the NHL.

The six-foot-eight, 260-pound forward has posted five goals, 11 points and 542 penalty minutes in 285 career regular season games with the Minnesota Wild, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Coyotes.

Scott joined the Canadiens organization on January 15th along with defenceman Victor Bartley in a trade with Arizona for defenceman Jared Tinordi and forward Stefan Fournier. He was named MVP of the NHL Al-Star Game in January.

A product of the WCHA’s Michigan Tech Huskies, Scott totaled 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) in 126 games at the collegiate level.

Johnston, 24, signed a two-year, two-way contract (2015-16 to 2016-17) with the Canadiens in July. The rookie pro has nine assists in 34 games with the IceCaps.

In 38 regular season games with the Colgate University Raiders of the ECAC in 2014-15, the five-foot-10, 180-pounder led all team defensemen in assists (14) and ranked tied for first in points (15). Johnston registered five goals and 42 points in 110 regular season games in his three seasons with Colgate from 2012 to 2015.

Johnston has no NHL experience.

McCarron, the Macomb, Michigan native has collected 34 points in 53 games with the IceCaps and registered a goal and an assist in 20 games with the Canadiens in 2015-16 – his first season of professional hockey.

Despite his lengthy stay in Montreal, McCarron still sits fifth in IceCaps team scoring and first among St. John’s freshmen.

The six-foot-six, 231-pounder was selected in the first round, 25th overall by the Canadiens in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

 

Bakker back to Wheeling
SHANE BAKKER RELEASED FROM PTO

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 2, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have released forward Shane Bakker from a 25-game Professional Tryout (PTO) contract.

Bakker, a six-foot-four, 210-pounder, registered a goal and 46 penalty minutes in 11 games with the IceCaps and earlier in the season, collected six assists in 20 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.

 

Thrower returns to IceCaps
DALTON THROWER JOINS ST. JOHN’S AT MILE ONE

ST. JOHN’S, NL (April 2, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have reassigned defenceman Dalton Thrower to the IceCaps from the Brampton Beast of the ECHL.

Thrower is scoreless in eight games with the IceCaps and has registered 20 penalty minutes.  The North Vancouver native has a goal, three assists and 60 penalty minutes in 29 contests with the Beast.

Game Report

Some players will say that the games they’re playing right now are like being in the playoffs. In many post-game interviews we’ve heard the phrase, “We’re playing for our lives.”  Every point matters at this time of year, and tonight the IceCaps played against a Crunch team who is chasing St. John’s for that final playoff position.

It was a rough and physical game from the start. Both teams played with a lot of intensity and determination.  But the IceCaps struggled all night to get out of their own end. Syracuse maintained control of much of the game, especially in the second period.

Gabriel Dumont did get his team on the board first, assisted by Brett Lernout and Josiah Didier.  But the opening frame also gave fans a massive fight between Shane Bakker and David Broll.  Bakker didn’t return to the game, injuring a finger in the brawl.

The IceCaps then started taking too many penalties, and although the Crunch didn’t convert any power play opportunities, it kept St. John’s on their heels.  The players also seemed to get frustrated with a number of missed penalty calls against Syracuse.

Eddie Pasquale stood tall in net, facing 39 shots total.  Brandon McNally got one back for his team midway through the third period, but the IceCaps just couldn’t get the puck into the net one more time for the equalizer.  Both benches met at one end of the ice in a massive trash-talking mass after the final horn, providing a likely preview of Sunday’s tilt.

Game Report

This was the kind of game the IceCaps needed as they push to stay in the playoff race.  It only took 39 seconds after puck drop for Max Friberg to pot the game’s first goal, assisted by Gabriel Dumont and Darren Dietz.

Next it was Shane Bakker’s turn to light the lamp, getting his first goal of the season. Andrew Yogan and John Scott assisted on Bakker’s goal, the third consecutive game with a helper for Yogan.

Dumont then scored a goal of his own in the waning seconds of the first period and the IceCaps headed to the dressing room up 3-0 at first intermission.

Penalty minutes started being served in the second period when Zach Stortini went hard at Morgan Ellis behind the net and Bakker dropped the gloves to defend his teammate.  The Senators were able to tally two goals in the second period, but Charles Hudon answered with a power play goal and Eddie Pasquale kept Binghamton out of the net for the rest of the game.

The Icecaps face the Binghamton Senators again on Wednesday night to finish out the back-to-back series.

Game Report

Friday night’s loss in Binghamton left the IceCaps looking for a solution to the persistent problem of how to get a win against the Senators.  They came out in Saturday night’s game with a lot of energy, obviously frustrated with their inability to find a way to get pucks past Chris Driedger.

That frustration spilled over early on in a game that saw three fights and a number of boarding and roughing calls.  Darren Dietz, Shane Bakker, and Michael McCarron all dropped the gloves with opponents. Senators captain Zach Stortini tried numerous times to get John Scott to go as well, but with no luck.

Casey Bailey got the home team on the board late in the first period after McCarron made a bad drop pass behind the net to a Binghamton player who fed the puck right to Bailey in the slot. After that, the goals kept coming for the Senators and it wasn’t until the third period when the IceCaps finally got on the scoreboard with a goal by Morgan Ellis.

The third period looked like a completely different game, with St. John’s getting 19 shots on goal compared to a cumulative nine shots on goal in the first forty minutes.

A highlight reel moment came in the dying moments of the game as Bud Holloway sprawled across the ice deflecting the puck with an outstretched stick away from the IceCaps empty net.

Once again, however, it was too little too late and the IceCaps left the ice with another loss.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Albany next for a game against the Devils on Wednesday night.

Game Report

After defeating the Syracuse Crunch twice last week, including the game in which Zach Fucale earned his first professional shutout, the IceCaps looked to repeat history when they came into the War Memorial Arena tonight.

The first period was buzzing with activity, as the Crunch got on the board just under two minutes into the game.  Immediately following their goal, Shane Bakker dropped the gloves with Brian Hart.  Soon afterwards Syracuse took the first penalty of the night and the IceCaps tied the game on the ensuing power play, thanks to a goal by John Scott.

The Crunch managed to get a go-ahead goal before the end of the frame, and the score stalled at 2-1 through the second period as well.  The IceCaps power play units got plenty of ice time as the Crunch continued to take penalties, and another fight broke out – this time between Brett Lernout and Mike Angelidis.

Finally, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Mike McCarron tallied another power play goal to tie the game.  The teams exchanged penalties during the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood strong and forced a shootout.  It took five rounds before a goal was scored, and it was McCarron again to win the game for St. John’s.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

Game Report

The Syracuse Crunch were hungry for payback. They had failed to score a goal in the previous night’s game against the IceCaps, and the St. John’s team wanted to keep them down.  Victor Bartley got things going for the hometown fans at Mile One Centre early in the first period with his first goal of the season, coming to him on the power play.

Then things got really testy on the ice.  A six-player fight broke out, with Michael McCarron, Darren Dietz, and Gabriel Dumont all throwing off the gloves and taking a Crunch player to task.  The IceCaps managed to get a man advantage out of the scrap, and Mark MacMillan capitalized on the power play.

But before the first period could come to an end, Syracuse managed to even the score.  Zach Fucale had to stand tall throughout the second period as he faced more than twice the shots then his opponent at the other end of the ice.  Shane Bakker was ejected from the game on a match penalty for boarding, and things were not looking good for the IceCaps.

Nikita Scherbak, however, did not give up and tallied another power play goal in the third period to knot the score at three-aside.  He, Dumont, and Morgan Ellis would be selected to start the overtime period that followed.  Charles Hudon sped up the ice on a breakaway and fired the puck from the slot to put a stamp on the game and give the IceCaps another win.

Jacob de la Rose was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens prior to the game starting.  The IceCaps return to the ice on Saturday to take on the Toronto Marlies.

Game Report

A very different-looking IceCaps team took the ice in St. John’s on Saturday night. Different not only because Michael McCarron was moved to right wing, Jacob de la Rose to the left wing, and Nikita Scherbak still at center, but also because the team came out with a surge of energy and intensity not recently seen.

McCarron was obviously simmering as he took a boarding penalty just over 30 seconds into the game.  Newcomer Shane Bakker then dropped the gloves and put a definitive stamp on his debut with the club.  De la Rose had something to prove as well, and scored the opening goal assisted by Gabriel Dumont and McCarron.

Less than a minute before the end of the period, the Comets tied things up on a power play.  The second period was played very tightly, with no goals added to the scoreboard, but plenty of penalties on both sides.

That carried over into the third period until Dumont potted a goal of his own, allowing the IceCaps to regain their one-goal lead.  Through a series of penalties, the home team struggled to maintain control of the game but the Comets managed to tie things up once again as the final minutes of the game wound down.  It took just five seconds in overtime for Brendan Gaunce to seal the win for Utica.

The IceCaps return to the ice Tuesday night to take on the Syracuse Crunch when they visit St. John’s.

ST. JOHN’S, NL (February 4, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have signed centre Shane Bakker to a 25-game Professional Tryout (PTO) contract.

Bakker, a six-foot-four, 210-pounder has collected six assists in 20 games with the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL and split last season between the Nailers and the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs.

MONTREAL, QUE. – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Bulldogs have assigned defenceman Bobby Shea to the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers and forward Shane Bakker has been released from his professional try out contract.

Shea has split this season between the Bulldogs and Nailers. In 12 games with Hamilton, he has recorded three points (one goal, two assists) and 21 penalty minutes. In 31 games with Wheeling, he has recorded six points (two goals, four assists) and 86 penalty minutes. In 41 career American Hockey League regular season games with the Bulldogs and Rockford IceHogs, the 5-11, 195-pound defenceman has recorded 10 points (four goals, six assists) and 105 penalty minutes. In 54 career ECHL regular season games with the Nailers, Toledo Walleye and Reading Royals, the Harrison Township, Mich. native has recorded 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and 125 penalty minutes. The 24-year-old was signed by the Bulldogs to a one-year contract on July 21, 2014.

Bakker has also split this season between the Bulldogs and Nailers. In 15 games with Hamilton, the 6-4, 210-pound forward recorded one assist and 37 penalty minutes. In 24 games with Wheeling, the Navan, Ont. native has recorded eight points (three goals, five assists) and 37 penalty minutes. In 73 career ECHL regular season games with the Nailers, he has recorded 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) and 113 penalty minutes. Prior to turning pro in 2013, Bakker played five seasons (2008 to 2013) for the Carleton University Ravens in Canadian Interuniversity Sport. In 121 games with Carleton, the 27-year-old recorded 48 points (17 goals, 31 assists) and 398 penalty minutes.

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Wednesday, March 4 when they’ll host the Adirondack Flames at FirstOntario Centre at 7:30 p.m.

MONTREAL, QUE. – Montreal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs general manager Marc Bergevin announced today the Canadiens have re-assigned defenceman Dalton Thrower to the Bulldogs from the ECHL’s Brampton Beast, while the ‘Dogs have recalled defenceman David Makowski from the ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers and signed forward Shane Bakker to a professional try out contract.

In seven games with Brampton this season, Thrower has recorded two assists and 26 penalty minutes. Before turning pro this season, the 6-0, 215-pound defenceman spent five seasons (2009 to 2014) in the Western Hockey League. In 285 career WHL regular season games with the Vancouver Giants and Saskatoon Blades, the Squamish, B.C. native recorded 147 points (42 goals, 105 assists) and 414 penalty minutes. The 21-year-old was selected by the Canadiens in the second round (51st overall) in the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

In his first year as a pro, Makowski has split this season between the Bulldogs and Nailers. In four games with Hamilton, the 6-1, 205-pound defenceman has recorded no points or penalty minutes. In 26 games with Wheeling, the St. Louis, Mo. native has recorded 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and 47 penalty minutes. Before turning pro, Makowski spent four seasons (2010 to 2014) with the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s University of Denver Pioneers. In 142 career games with the University of Denver, the 25-year-old recorded 93 points (27 goals, 66 assists) and 169 penalty minutes. Hamilton signed Makowski to a one-year contract on June 18, 2014.

Bakker has also split this season between the Bulldogs and Nailers. In eight games with Hamilton, the 6-4, 210-pound forward has recorded 16 penalty minutes. In 24 games with Wheeling, the Navan, Ont. native has recorded eight points (three goals, five assists) and 37 penalty minutes. In 73 career ECHL regular season games with the Nailers, he has recorded 26 points (nine goals, 17 assists) and 113 penalty minutes.
