Game Report

It’s been a week since the IceCaps had back-to-back win momentum against the Utica Comets and they seemed to lose a lot of energy during that time.

Tonight’s game was lackluster, at best.  No energy, no penalties until the third period, and not a lot in the way of shots.

Hartford, still in the hunt for a playoff position, tallied goal after goal and found themselves up 3-0 in the final frame.  A power play goal by Michael McCarron put the IceCaps on the board with Bud Holloway and Morgan Ellis assisting on the goal.  With that helper, Holloway tied his personal best for points in a season (61) and set a new team record for most assists in a season (42).

Zach Fucale had some tremendous saves in net, but the Wolf Pack kept coming and St. John’s just couldn’t muster anything close to a comeback.

The IceCaps close out their season on Saturday with one more game against the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Game Report

Here was the night the IceCaps and their fans had been waiting for.  A strong team win, despite knowing that the playoffs are now out of reach.

Jeremy Gregoire was the first one to get on the scoreboard against the Utica Comets, assisted by Jeremiah Addison who notched his first pro point with the helper.  Addison made his debut in this game in addition to Daniel Audette and Simon Bourque.

Bourque would also get his first pro point on an assist to Jacob de la Rose’s power play goal in the third period, which would put the IceCaps ahead of the Comets 2-1.  Utica peppered netminder Zach Fucale all night long, outshooting St. John’s 49-27 when all was said and done.  Fucale looked strong and focused in net.

After Taylor Fedun scored the equalizer late in the third, earning his team a spot in the AHL playoffs, it was time for an extra period.  Morgan Ellis came up big for the IceCaps with a rocket one-timer from the top of the circle to give them a much-needed win.

The IceCaps finish out their season series against Utica tomorrow with a matinee game at Mile One Centre.

Game Report

After defeating the Syracuse Crunch twice last week, including the game in which Zach Fucale earned his first professional shutout, the IceCaps looked to repeat history when they came into the War Memorial Arena tonight.

The first period was buzzing with activity, as the Crunch got on the board just under two minutes into the game.  Immediately following their goal, Shane Bakker dropped the gloves with Brian Hart.  Soon afterwards Syracuse took the first penalty of the night and the IceCaps tied the game on the ensuing power play, thanks to a goal by John Scott.

The Crunch managed to get a go-ahead goal before the end of the frame, and the score stalled at 2-1 through the second period as well.  The IceCaps power play units got plenty of ice time as the Crunch continued to take penalties, and another fight broke out – this time between Brett Lernout and Mike Angelidis.

Finally, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Mike McCarron tallied another power play goal to tie the game.  The teams exchanged penalties during the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood strong and forced a shootout.  It took five rounds before a goal was scored, and it was McCarron again to win the game for St. John’s.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

Game Report

The IceCaps needed a win. They needed their goaltender to stand strong. They needed their offense to get pucks to the net. They needed their defense to keep the opponent at bay. Finally, on the sixth and last game of the St. John’s homestand, the team got what they needed.

Zach Fucale got the start this afternoon, and it looked like history might repeat itself again when Nikita Soshnikov potted the first goal less than six minutes into the game.  But this time, the IceCaps responded in force.  Morgan Ellis tied things up with a power play goal, followed by Daniel Carr who also scored on the man advantage.

The Marlies found their way to the net equally as well, though, and kept the game close. Then Markus Eisenschmid scored his first AHL goal in style: shorthanded.  Ellis found the back of the net again, this time with the help of Michael McCarron and Darren Dietz.  Lucas Lessio added to the tally and Gabriel Dumont slid in an empty netter to put the seal on Toronto.

In addition to Eisenschmid notching his first goal, Ryan Johnston earned his first pro point with a secondary assist on Carr’s goal.  John Scott participated in both the morning skate and in pre-game warmups, but did not play.

The IceCaps now hit the road for a six-game trip before the All-Star break, beginning with a tilt against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Wednesday.
