Game Report

Despite a few battle scars from the previous night, the IceCaps took to their home ice on Saturday night ready for another round with the Albany Devils.  And they came out blazing.

Nikita Scherbak continued his success on the first line with a power play goal just six minutes into the game, assisted by Bud Holloway and Ryan Johnston.  Joel Hanley also found the back of the net with assists from Max Friberg and Andrew Yogan.

But then the Devils found their footing. By the end of the first period, they had answered with four consecutive goals.  The IceCaps only mustered three shots on goal in the period, which didn’t help them keep the scoring more even.

Holloway got one goal back for St. John’s in the second period, and then in third it was Brandon McNally who got the equalizer in the third.  Both teams had a couple of good chances late in regulation but the goaltenders kept the score even at four each.

Overtime gave the IceCaps an opportunity to get six more shots on goal, but none of them would get through.  Yogan took a holding penalty and the Devils scored the winner on the ensuing power play.

Despite the loss, it was a good night for Scherbak with a goal and two assists, and newcomer Yogan has tallied an assist in each of the two games he’s played for St. John’s.  He had to be helped off the ice at the end of the game, however, after going down awkwardly and favoring his left foot.

The Icecaps now look to Tuesday night when the Binghamton Senators come to St. John’s for a two-night series.

Game Report

After defeating the Syracuse Crunch twice last week, including the game in which Zach Fucale earned his first professional shutout, the IceCaps looked to repeat history when they came into the War Memorial Arena tonight.

The first period was buzzing with activity, as the Crunch got on the board just under two minutes into the game.  Immediately following their goal, Shane Bakker dropped the gloves with Brian Hart.  Soon afterwards Syracuse took the first penalty of the night and the IceCaps tied the game on the ensuing power play, thanks to a goal by John Scott.

The Crunch managed to get a go-ahead goal before the end of the frame, and the score stalled at 2-1 through the second period as well.  The IceCaps power play units got plenty of ice time as the Crunch continued to take penalties, and another fight broke out – this time between Brett Lernout and Mike Angelidis.

Finally, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Mike McCarron tallied another power play goal to tie the game.  The teams exchanged penalties during the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood strong and forced a shootout.  It took five rounds before a goal was scored, and it was McCarron again to win the game for St. John’s.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

Game Report

The Syracuse Crunch were hungry for payback. They had failed to score a goal in the previous night’s game against the IceCaps, and the St. John’s team wanted to keep them down.  Victor Bartley got things going for the hometown fans at Mile One Centre early in the first period with his first goal of the season, coming to him on the power play.

Then things got really testy on the ice.  A six-player fight broke out, with Michael McCarron, Darren Dietz, and Gabriel Dumont all throwing off the gloves and taking a Crunch player to task.  The IceCaps managed to get a man advantage out of the scrap, and Mark MacMillan capitalized on the power play.

But before the first period could come to an end, Syracuse managed to even the score.  Zach Fucale had to stand tall throughout the second period as he faced more than twice the shots then his opponent at the other end of the ice.  Shane Bakker was ejected from the game on a match penalty for boarding, and things were not looking good for the IceCaps.

Nikita Scherbak, however, did not give up and tallied another power play goal in the third period to knot the score at three-aside.  He, Dumont, and Morgan Ellis would be selected to start the overtime period that followed.  Charles Hudon sped up the ice on a breakaway and fired the puck from the slot to put a stamp on the game and give the IceCaps another win.

Jacob de la Rose was recalled by the Montreal Canadiens prior to the game starting.  The IceCaps return to the ice on Saturday to take on the Toronto Marlies.

Game Report

A very different-looking IceCaps team took the ice in St. John’s on Saturday night. Different not only because Michael McCarron was moved to right wing, Jacob de la Rose to the left wing, and Nikita Scherbak still at center, but also because the team came out with a surge of energy and intensity not recently seen.

McCarron was obviously simmering as he took a boarding penalty just over 30 seconds into the game.  Newcomer Shane Bakker then dropped the gloves and put a definitive stamp on his debut with the club.  De la Rose had something to prove as well, and scored the opening goal assisted by Gabriel Dumont and McCarron.

Less than a minute before the end of the period, the Comets tied things up on a power play.  The second period was played very tightly, with no goals added to the scoreboard, but plenty of penalties on both sides.

That carried over into the third period until Dumont potted a goal of his own, allowing the IceCaps to regain their one-goal lead.  Through a series of penalties, the home team struggled to maintain control of the game but the Comets managed to tie things up once again as the final minutes of the game wound down.  It took just five seconds in overtime for Brendan Gaunce to seal the win for Utica.

The IceCaps return to the ice Tuesday night to take on the Syracuse Crunch when they visit St. John’s.

Game Report

As the road trip continued for the St. John’s IceCaps, they found themselves taking the ice in another NHL rink – this time in Buffalo at the First Niagara Center.  The Rochester Americans got things started with a lot of energy, especially after the IceCaps gave them a few early power play opportunities.

The Americans converted one of those man advantages in the first period and went into the intermission with a one-goal lead.

The second period kicked off with a quick goal by Gabriel Dumont just 21 seconds in, but Rochester got it right back just over a minute later.  Jacob de la Rose and Lucas Lessio were some of the strongest players on the puck tonight, checking well and skating hard.  Dustin Tokarski was shaky at times, but settled in as the game wore on.  Late in the period, Charles Hudon found the back of the net on a power play to even the score at 2-2.

St. John’s came out in the third looking a little slow and disorganized, but neither team could get a puck past the opposing goaltender.  The overtime period was fast and frenzied, with Tokarski making some key saves to keep the IceCaps in it.  However once the shootout came around, Tokarski was unable to stop any of the three Amerks shooters.

Mike McCarron left the game early in the third period after taking an apparent stick to the face and did not return to the bench.  The IceCaps return to the ice on Thursday night when they take on the Senators in Binghamton, NY.

Game Report

After a disappointing loss to the Rochester Americans last night, the IceCaps looked to right the ship when they faced the Amerks again tonight.  Shots on goal were kept on more of an even keel this night, until the third period when the IceCaps seemed to run out of gas.

The opening frame was played quietly in terms of offense, but the penalty box was active during the first 20 minutes yet again.  Mark Barberio, Angelo Miceli, and Brett Lernout all found themselves serving minors.

Captain Gabriel Dumont got the home team on the board first, assisted by Jeremy Gregoire and Jacob de la Rose.  That’s points in two consecutive games for JDLR after returning from injury.  The Amerks and IceCaps then traded a couple of goals, with Stefan Fournier scoring for St. John’s.

The third period was all Rochester.  The IceCaps were pinned in their own zone for minutes at a time, eventually resulting in a game-tying goal by Tim Schaller which would end up forcing overtime.  The top line of Miceli, Mike McCarron, and Bud Holloway started the 3-on-3 OT, but Jason Akeson sniped the puck past Pasquale just over a minute into the extra minutes.

The IceCaps return to the ice on Tuesday night when the Albany Devils come to St. John’s for a back-to-back series.

Game Report

The IceCaps, looking to continue their win streak, started off tonight’s game in Albany with seven shots on goal in the first period.  It would be the highest number of shots on goal for St. John’s in any period for the rest of the game.  After a fairly uneventful opening 10 minutes, Michael McCarron got called for a boarding penalty which led to a quick power play goal by the Devils.

20 seconds later, Gabriel Dumont responded with a goal of his own to even the score, assisted by Joel Hanley and Stefan Fournier.  Not long after that, Jeremy Gregoire and Corey Tropp dropped the gloves for a spirited fight.

But it was a hard hit to the head on Jeremy Gregoire in the second period that sent Dan Kelly to the dressing room for the night with a match penalty.  Gregoire eventually made his way off the ice under his own power, albeit very bloodied.

The Devils peppered Dustin Tokarski all night long. Tokarski, down from the Habs on a conditioning stint, responded well after shaking off some the rust from not playing in Montreal yet this season.  He had some key saves during the game and especially in overtime.

Outshot 38-18 by the Albany Devils, the IceCaps couldn’t get out of their own zone long enough to get the game winner before Paul Thompson found an opening short side to end the game.  Also down for a conditioning stint is Jarred Tinordi, who played exceptionally well throughout the game.

The IceCaps have now earned points in nine straight games.

Game Report

Coming into this game, the IceCaps had settled their last five consecutive games in overtime or a shootout.  This game in Rochester would follow that trend, adding a sixth game of extra minutes to the St. John’s streak.

It was the first of another six-game roadtrip for the IceCaps and the first period made them look tired and sluggish.  They spent most of the period pinned in their own end, only tallying five shots on goal.  Discipline became a factor once again as penalties started early.  Jarred Tinordi, sent down from Montreal for a conditioning stint, had two penalties on the night.

After the first intermission, the IceCaps found themselves down by a goal but seemed to find some energy. They turned the tables on the Americans, skating faster, getting shots on net, and drawing penalties.  Morgan Ellis tied things up and then the first line of Daniel Carr, Michael McCarron, and Charles Hudon turned on the jets.  They were strong in the crease, putting pressure on Rochester’s goaltender, and were rewarded with a power play goal for Carr and an even-strength goal for McCarron.

The IceCaps held onto their one goal lead for the remainder of the game, despite some close calls shut down by Zach Fucale.  It was a late goal by defenseman Colby Robak , however, that tied the game with 16 seconds remaining and eventually forcing overtime.

Extra time was pretty evenly played, with both goaltenders making some big saves. Hudon had a bad turnover which led to a two-man rush against him during which he broke his stick trying to defend the play.

No St. John’s shooters were able to score in the shootout, and just one goal by Jason Akeson for Rochester was all it took to finish this one.

The IceCaps came out strong Friday night when they took to the Mile One ice against the Syracuse Crunch.  They skated hard, maintained pressure, and kept the Crunch on a defensive stance.  But discipline soon became an issue once again, with two minor penalties going against St. John’s in the first period alone.

Neither team found the back of the net in that opening frame, but Sven Andrighetto potted a power play goal just a few minutes into the second period, his fifth of the season.  Stefan Fournier followed that with an even-strength goal just a minute and a half later and the IceCaps looked to have the dominant momentum.

Then came more penalties, five total for the IceCaps on the night, and Syracuse started to wear down the home team.  The latter portion of the second period and the entirety of the third were slow and sloppy for the IceCaps as the two teams traded goals back and forth.

An ill-timed penalty against Mike McCarron late in the third provided an opening for the game tying Syracuse goal, and for the third consecutive game the IceCaps headed to overtime.  It took less than a minute for Andrighetto to end the evening the same way he started it, clinching the OT win for his team.

Immediately after the game Andrighetto was called up to the Montreal Canadiens ahead of their Sunday night game against the New York Islanders, while goaltender Eddie Pasquale was reassigned to the Brampton Beast.

The IceCaps return to Mile One tonight for the second game of their back-to-back against Syracuse.

Game Report

Looking at the game sheet, you would be excused if you came to the conclusion that the AHL was testing new, larger nets at Mile One on Saturday night. Both starting goaltenders, Zach Fucale and Toronto’s Antoine Bibeau gave up eight goals. In Fucale’s case, three-quarters of the goals allowed could be categorized as soft or very soft.

After allowing his eighth goal, fourth of the third period, Fucale was lifted in favour of Eddie Pasquale. In a quirk of the scoring rules, despite making seven of eight stops, Pasquale was charged with the loss.

The IceCaps scored five goals in the second period and had an 8-4 lead with 19 minutes left in the third period. But the Marlies showed resilience, taking advantage of some shaky goaltending.

On the positive side was the night of Mike McCarron. The rookie centre set an IceCaps franchise record with two goals and three assists for five points. Defenceman Morgan Ellis has a solid game with two goals and an assist on four shots.

In 16 games, the IceCaps have now given up 59 goals which is tops in the league. Allowing 3.69 goals per game is not a recipe for success.

The IceCaps will have the week to work on team defense before a two-game series against the Syracuse Crunch at Mile One Centre.
