Game Report

For the final game of the season, the IceCaps did not disappoint their fans.  After a quickly played first period which again did not see any goals or penalties, the Wolf Pack struck first in the second period.

After that, it was Jacob de la Rose who stormed into the second frame with a beautiful shot from the high slot to tie the game.  Both goaltenders, Eddie Pasquale and Mackenzie Skapski, were lights out stopping shot after shot from either team.

In the third period Tim Bozon got the go-ahead goal and the IceCaps kept the Wolf Pack at bay for the rest of the game.  It was a tremendous way for the team to end their season as they saluted their St. John’s fans from center ice.

Prior to the game, awards were given out by the team to some of its players.  Michael McCarron was named Rookie of the Year, Zach Fucale was named Community Man of the Year, Josiah Dider was awarded the Hardest Working Player, Morgan Ellis won Top Defenceman, and captain Gabriel Dumont earned the MVP award for the season.

Game Report

It’s been a week since the IceCaps had back-to-back win momentum against the Utica Comets and they seemed to lose a lot of energy during that time.

Tonight’s game was lackluster, at best.  No energy, no penalties until the third period, and not a lot in the way of shots.

Hartford, still in the hunt for a playoff position, tallied goal after goal and found themselves up 3-0 in the final frame.  A power play goal by Michael McCarron put the IceCaps on the board with Bud Holloway and Morgan Ellis assisting on the goal.  With that helper, Holloway tied his personal best for points in a season (61) and set a new team record for most assists in a season (42).

Zach Fucale had some tremendous saves in net, but the Wolf Pack kept coming and St. John’s just couldn’t muster anything close to a comeback.

The IceCaps close out their season on Saturday with one more game against the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Game Report

It’s a story IceCaps fans are quite familiar with at this point: St. John’s gives up a goal early in the first period, then another.  They take too many penalties, the power play can’t convert, and they finally turn on the jets in the third period when it’s too late to make a comeback.  And it’s a story we have to tell again after tonight’s game.

It only took two and a half minutes for the opposition to score on the IceCaps this time.  Soon after, John Scott got into his first full fight as an IceCap and things went downhill from there.  Mark MacMillan got called for a high-sticking double minor at the end of the first period, giving the Comets about three minutes of power play time to open the second period.

Former Montreal Canadiens forward Brandon Prust earned two points on the evening for two consecutive assists.  Jeremy Gregoire also dropped the gloves, as did Charles Hudon – with Malcolm Subban.

A few minutes into the third period, Bud Holloway found the back of the net on the power play.  Nikita Scherbak and Morgan Ellis assisted on the goal.  The IceCaps scrambled and pressured the Comets throughout the rest of the third but goaltender Richard Bachman stood tall and didn’t allow any more pucks to get through.

Captain Gabriel Dumont returned to the IceCaps lineup for this game.  Mac Bennett was recalled from the Brampton Beast before the game, while Ellis and Michael McCarron were called up to the Montreal Canadiens immediately following the game.

The Icecaps finish up their road trip with a rematch in Syracuse with the Crunch Saturday night.

ROSTER MOVE | Canadiens Recall McCarron and Ellis from IceCaps

McCarron and Ellis recalled

Ellis McCarron

MONTREAL, QC — The Canadiens recalled forward Michael McCarron and defenseman Morgan Ellisfrom the IceCaps following the team’s game against the Utica Comets on Friday night. The two will join the Habs in Montreal on Saturday.

A 2013 first-round pick, McCarron currently sits third on the IceCaps with 15 goals and 34 points in 53 AHL games. He previously suited up for two games with the Canadiens earlier this season, where he racked up four penalty minutes and finished with a minus-1 differential.

This is Ellis’ first NHL recall since the 23-year-old was drafted by Montreal in the fourth round in 2010. The shifty blue-liner has 12 goals in 55 games with St. John’s this year, the second-most of any AHL defenseman in 2015-16. He’s also chipped in with 18 assists, giving him 30 points on the season to date.

Game Report

Friday night’s loss in Binghamton left the IceCaps looking for a solution to the persistent problem of how to get a win against the Senators.  They came out in Saturday night’s game with a lot of energy, obviously frustrated with their inability to find a way to get pucks past Chris Driedger.

That frustration spilled over early on in a game that saw three fights and a number of boarding and roughing calls.  Darren Dietz, Shane Bakker, and Michael McCarron all dropped the gloves with opponents. Senators captain Zach Stortini tried numerous times to get John Scott to go as well, but with no luck.

Casey Bailey got the home team on the board late in the first period after McCarron made a bad drop pass behind the net to a Binghamton player who fed the puck right to Bailey in the slot. After that, the goals kept coming for the Senators and it wasn’t until the third period when the IceCaps finally got on the scoreboard with a goal by Morgan Ellis.

The third period looked like a completely different game, with St. John’s getting 19 shots on goal compared to a cumulative nine shots on goal in the first forty minutes.

A highlight reel moment came in the dying moments of the game as Bud Holloway sprawled across the ice deflecting the puck with an outstretched stick away from the IceCaps empty net.

Once again, however, it was too little too late and the IceCaps left the ice with another loss.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Albany next for a game against the Devils on Wednesday night.

Game Report

After defeating the Syracuse Crunch twice last week, including the game in which Zach Fucale earned his first professional shutout, the IceCaps looked to repeat history when they came into the War Memorial Arena tonight.

The first period was buzzing with activity, as the Crunch got on the board just under two minutes into the game.  Immediately following their goal, Shane Bakker dropped the gloves with Brian Hart.  Soon afterwards Syracuse took the first penalty of the night and the IceCaps tied the game on the ensuing power play, thanks to a goal by John Scott.

The Crunch managed to get a go-ahead goal before the end of the frame, and the score stalled at 2-1 through the second period as well.  The IceCaps power play units got plenty of ice time as the Crunch continued to take penalties, and another fight broke out – this time between Brett Lernout and Mike Angelidis.

Finally, with just over two minutes left in regulation, Mike McCarron tallied another power play goal to tie the game.  The teams exchanged penalties during the overtime period, but both goaltenders stood strong and forced a shootout.  It took five rounds before a goal was scored, and it was McCarron again to win the game for St. John’s.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

Game Report

It’s been a good homestand for the IceCaps this time around, winning their last three games consecutively.  But on this Valentine’s Day afternoon, the league-leading Marlies weren’t planning on giving the home team a clean sweep of the series.

Shots on goal were pretty even in the first period as the goaltenders Garret Sparks and Eddie Pasquale kept both teams out of the net.

Then Brett Findlay found mesh for his second goal of the season just five minutes into the second period.  Discipline problems crept back in for the IceCaps as a parade to the penalty box seemed unending.  Findlay solved Pasquale yet again in the third period as the Marlies continued to pepper the St. John’s goalie mercilessly.

Bud Holloway continued his heroics from the previous night and blasted home a shot from the blue line late in the third period on a power play.  The IceCaps scrambled to try to find a way to even the score before the final horn, but couldn’t make it happen.

Gabriel Dumont was not in the lineup today, having left the game in the third period last night.  The IceCaps now head out on their next road trip. First up is a visit to Syracuse to take on the crunch before heading to Binghamton for a back-to-back series Friday and Saturday night.

Game Report

After winning back-to-back games against the Syracuse Crunch earlier in the week, the IceCaps hit home ice on Saturday night to take on the Toronto Marlies and continue their win streak.

The Marlies struck early, popping in an awkward goal past Zach Fucale just three minutes after the opening faceoff.  But the penalty bug hit the St. John’s team early, and they would rack up three minor penalties in the opening period alone.

Bud Holloway was the key player on the ice for the home team on this night. Time and again he set up fellow linemates with perfect passes, earning two assists – one on Max Friberg’s goal and one on Charles Hudon’s goal – before potting an empty-netter of his own at the end of the game to seal a victory for the IceCaps.

Michael McCarron is also getting back to the points game, earning two assists of his own during this game and providing strong skill on faceoffs.  Fucale stood tall after that first goal and seemed to gain confidence as the game wore on.  Gabriel Dumont disappeared from the bench early in the third period and did not return.  It was John Scott’s first game back in the lineup after participating in the NHL All-Star game and taking some personal time for the birth of his twins.

The IceCaps welcome the Marlies back to Mile One Centre tomorrow for a rematch before heading out on their next road trip.
