Game Report

Despite a few battle scars from the previous night, the IceCaps took to their home ice on Saturday night ready for another round with the Albany Devils.  And they came out blazing.

Nikita Scherbak continued his success on the first line with a power play goal just six minutes into the game, assisted by Bud Holloway and Ryan Johnston.  Joel Hanley also found the back of the net with assists from Max Friberg and Andrew Yogan.

But then the Devils found their footing. By the end of the first period, they had answered with four consecutive goals.  The IceCaps only mustered three shots on goal in the period, which didn’t help them keep the scoring more even.

Holloway got one goal back for St. John’s in the second period, and then in third it was Brandon McNally who got the equalizer in the third.  Both teams had a couple of good chances late in regulation but the goaltenders kept the score even at four each.

Overtime gave the IceCaps an opportunity to get six more shots on goal, but none of them would get through.  Yogan took a holding penalty and the Devils scored the winner on the ensuing power play.

Despite the loss, it was a good night for Scherbak with a goal and two assists, and newcomer Yogan has tallied an assist in each of the two games he’s played for St. John’s.  He had to be helped off the ice at the end of the game, however, after going down awkwardly and favoring his left foot.

The Icecaps now look to Tuesday night when the Binghamton Senators come to St. John’s for a two-night series.

Game Report

After a few days of travel and practice, the IceCaps came into Albany tonight looking for a win after dropping their last two to Binghamton. Charles Hudon was back in the lineup after missing one game due to injury.

But less than five minutes into the game it felt like deja vu all over again as the Devils got on the board first.  By the midway point of the second period they held a 3-0 lead over the IceCaps, and the visiting team was looking unorganized and frustrated.

Coach Sylvain Lefebvre must have lit a fire under the team in the second intermission as they came out blazing in the third period, with Hudon getting St. John’s on the board just over a minute into the frame.  Thirty seconds later it was Tim Bozon’s turn to put a puck past Yann Danis – his first goal of the season.

The IceCaps continued to pressure throughout the third, but in the final minute allowed Albany to get an empty net goal.  With just three seconds remaining Bozon got the IceCaps within one goal, but again it was too late for the full comeback and St. John’s dropped their third consecutive game.

Victor Bartley was called up to the Montreal Canadiens the day before this game, which then led to Travis Brown getting called up to the IceCaps from the Brampton Beast. Brown did not play in this game, however.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Utica for a game against the Comets on Saturday night.

Game Report

While the blizzard impacting much of the eastern coast of the United States dumped massive amounts of snow just south of Albany, the IceCaps and Devils took to the ice at Times Union Center for a rematch of last night’s game.  St. John’s looked to continue their success from the previous game, and came out strong against Albany.

Eddie Pasquale and Scott Wedgewood were the two goaltenders protecting their respective nets, and they were the key to the game right off the bat.  Lucas Lessio had a couple of good chances on breakaways, but Wedgewood denied him each time.  The first line of Lessio, Michael McCarron, and Nikita Scherbak also drove hard to the net on a three-man rush, but Wedgewood stood strong against Scherbak’s shot.

Then in the second period, the IceCaps found a way past the opposing goalie.  Max Friberg slid a perfect pass over to Gabriel Dumont to get the visitors on the board.  The first line continued to impress, with multiple odd-man rushes which came close to adding to the goal tally.  Finally, on a power play, Charles Hudon and McCarron connected with Sven Andrighetto to make a 2-0 game.

Tempers flared and while there was only one actual fight, things got very tense on the ice at times.  Albany battled back, scoring a goal on the man advantage, but Pasquale and the entire team clamped down and held their lead to defeat the Devils once again.

The IceCaps next head to Portland, Maine for games against the Pirates on Wednesday and Friday before heading back to Connecticut to take on the Hartford Wolfpack on Saturday.

Game Report

After a disappointing overtime loss on Wednesday night in Bridgeport, the IceCaps headed into tonight’s game against the Albany Devils looking a little less-than-enthusiastic.  Just over four minutes into the game, the Devils got on the board and outshot the visitors 9-0 in the first half of the game.  It looked like it could be a long night for the IceCaps.

But towards the start of the second period, St. John’s found their focus when Morgan Ellis sent a slapshot past Yann Danis to even the score.  20 seconds later Jim O’Brien potted his second of the night, but it only took Nikita Scherbak another 20 seconds to brings things back to 2-2 on his second goal of the season.

Finding themselves on a 5-on-3, the IceCaps continued to pressure the Devils and Charles Hudon found the mesh off a shot from the faceoff circle to give his team their first lead of the game.  Sven Andrighetto and Ryan Johnston assisted on the goal.

In the third period Andrighetto added to his point tally with a fortunate puck deflection off his skate to give the IceCaps a 4-2 lead which they were able to maintain until the final horn.

Discipline was key for this game, and for once it was because the IceCaps stayed out of the penalty box. Hudon seemed to hit his head or face in the third period and headed off to the dressing room after taking a while to get up off the ice.

The IceCaps have a rematch with the Albany Devils on Saturday afternoon for a matinee game.

Game Report

If the previous night’s game against the Albany Devils was exciting, this night’s game greatly surpassed it. Michael McCarron got things rolling just 30 seconds after puck drop with his 11th goal of the season, assisted by Bud Holloway.  Next up it was Angelo Miceli with his third tally of the season, quickly followed by another McCarron goal – this one on the power play.  Scott Wedgewood, giving up three goals on six shots, took a seat on the bench as Yann Danis was tapped to replace him in net.

Frustration for the Devils started to boil over, with Thompson dropping the gloves with Didier, and scrums popping up at every stoppage.  The second period saw a complete change on the ice as Albany came out strong, outshooting the IceCaps 18-7 and getting one goal back.

Then the power play unit came up big for St. John’s once again as Joel Hanley potted one, and McCarron topped off the night with a third goal to complete his second hat trick of the season.

Eddie Pasquale stood tall in net during this game, giving up only one goal on 46 shots.  Lucas Lessio made his IceCaps debut, after being acquired from Arizona in exchange for Christian Thomas.  Lessio found himself on the top line with McCarron and Bud Holloway.

The IceCaps now have some time off for a holiday break, after which they’ll head out on their next road trip beginning in Toronto on Boxing Day.

Game Report

The IceCaps, looking to continue their win streak, started off tonight’s game in Albany with seven shots on goal in the first period.  It would be the highest number of shots on goal for St. John’s in any period for the rest of the game.  After a fairly uneventful opening 10 minutes, Michael McCarron got called for a boarding penalty which led to a quick power play goal by the Devils.

20 seconds later, Gabriel Dumont responded with a goal of his own to even the score, assisted by Joel Hanley and Stefan Fournier.  Not long after that, Jeremy Gregoire and Corey Tropp dropped the gloves for a spirited fight.

But it was a hard hit to the head on Jeremy Gregoire in the second period that sent Dan Kelly to the dressing room for the night with a match penalty.  Gregoire eventually made his way off the ice under his own power, albeit very bloodied.

The Devils peppered Dustin Tokarski all night long. Tokarski, down from the Habs on a conditioning stint, responded well after shaking off some the rust from not playing in Montreal yet this season.  He had some key saves during the game and especially in overtime.

Outshot 38-18 by the Albany Devils, the IceCaps couldn’t get out of their own zone long enough to get the game winner before Paul Thompson found an opening short side to end the game.  Also down for a conditioning stint is Jarred Tinordi, who played exceptionally well throughout the game.

The IceCaps have now earned points in nine straight games.
