Game Report

After riding a high from last night’s hard-fought team win, the IceCaps then rode a bus across the border to Toronto, Ontario and arrived in the early morning hours at their hotel only to wake up early and hit the ice for an afternoon matinee.  They faced a rested, refreshed Marlies team at the Air Canada Centre and their fatigue showed.

Brett Lernout actually got things started on a positive note with his second goal of the season, assisted by Nikita Scherbak and Charles Hudon. And then St. John’s reverted to slow, sloppy, tired play and unsteady goaltending and found themselves down 3-1 by the end of the first period.

Adding insult to injury, the IceCaps then began taking penalty after penalty in the second frame. Thankfully the penalty killers stood strong yet again and denied the Marlies on every man advantage.  Bud Holloway got his team one goal closer to a comeback by banking in a wide open rebound.  He was assisted by Gabriel Dumont and Brandon McNally.

Hudon then scored his 26th goal of the season about halfway through the third period to bring St. John’s to within one goal of the Marlies.  But Brendan Leipsic deflated any hope the IceCaps had with a late-period goal against Zach Fucale to seal a victory for Toronto.

The IceCaps have some rest and practice to look forward to over the next couple of days before they visit Ricoh Coliseum on Tuesday for their last tilt against the Marlies for this season.

Game Report

IceCaps fans watching tonight’s game may have thought they were experiencing deja vu. Charles Hudon scored first for St. John’s again, assisted by Nikita Scherbak, tying the game early in the first period at 1-1.

In the second period, the IceCaps once again opened up the scoring with two goals by Brandon McNally, and a goal by Morgan Ellis.  Cory Ward added two more assists to his season tally.  Penalties came and went, but the penalty killing unit stood tall and denied every Rochester attempt to put pucks through Eddie Pasquale.

Then, in the final frame, Max Friberg put the IceCaps up 5-1 – just like they started the period on Wednesday night.  And just like the previous game, that’s when the Americans started to mount a comeback, scoring two quick goals.  But Pasquale stood his ground, despite being peppered with 28 shots in the 3rd period, and the IceCaps took this one decisively 5-3.

It was a valiant team win by a group of hockey players who have faced some devastating losses over the last week of the season.  The win should give them a much-needed boost of confidence going into Saturday’s afternoon matinee against the Toronto Marlies at the Air Canada Centre.

SYRACUSE, NY. — The Montreal Canadiens AHL affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps are currently on a six-game road trip through upstate New York and Toronto. The IceCaps had an exciting overtime win in Utica before dropping two games in Syracuse. You can read full reports for each game here.

The IceCaps Hockey Report | All Habs Hockey Magazine team was onsite in Utica and Syracuse to take in the action against the Comets and the Crunch.

Following the game against the Crunch, IceCaps forward Brandon McNally kindly spent a few minutes with our video producer, Amy Johnson.

Game Report

Some players will say that the games they’re playing right now are like being in the playoffs. In many post-game interviews we’ve heard the phrase, “We’re playing for our lives.”  Every point matters at this time of year, and tonight the IceCaps played against a Crunch team who is chasing St. John’s for that final playoff position.

It was a rough and physical game from the start. Both teams played with a lot of intensity and determination.  But the IceCaps struggled all night to get out of their own end. Syracuse maintained control of much of the game, especially in the second period.

Gabriel Dumont did get his team on the board first, assisted by Brett Lernout and Josiah Didier.  But the opening frame also gave fans a massive fight between Shane Bakker and David Broll.  Bakker didn’t return to the game, injuring a finger in the brawl.

The IceCaps then started taking too many penalties, and although the Crunch didn’t convert any power play opportunities, it kept St. John’s on their heels.  The players also seemed to get frustrated with a number of missed penalty calls against Syracuse.

Eddie Pasquale stood tall in net, facing 39 shots total.  Brandon McNally got one back for his team midway through the third period, but the IceCaps just couldn’t get the puck into the net one more time for the equalizer.  Both benches met at one end of the ice in a massive trash-talking mass after the final horn, providing a likely preview of Sunday’s tilt.

Game Report

In the first game of the final road trip of their regular season, the IceCaps took the ice in Utica for an energetic matchup against the Comets.  Both teams are jockeying for a playoff position, giving the atmosphere a bit more intensity.

Jeremy Gregoire got things started the right way with a quick goal after a few minutes into the first frame.  He was assisted by Mark MacMillan and Brandon McNally.  Many close calls at both ends, but Zach Fucale and Joe Cannata were on top of things in their respective creases.

The second period started off with some tense scrums after the whistles, but soon settled down into a fast-paced rhythm. Penalties started to rack up on both sides of the ice, as did hits.  The IceCaps sustained a good amount of offensive pressure, but couldn’t get the puck through Cannata.

The third period was all Comets. Midway through the frame, Carter Bancks walked off the side boards and snapped it past Zach Fucale.  With the score tied, Utica did not let up. With six minutes left in the third, the Comets were outshooting the IceCaps 14-1.

Fucale played a strong positional game and limited rebounds. He also had help in front of him with some excellent shot-blocking particularly by Max Friberg.

In the overtime period, it was time for Friberg to show off his offensive skills. Taking a pass from Morgan Ellis, Friberg came down the right side and snapped a rocket past Comets goalie Joe Cannata to give the IceCaps the win.

Game Report

With their roster slowly and steadily getting called up to the Montreal Canadiens, and after a dismal game on Wednesday night, one might think that playing against the top-rated Hershey Bears might not bode well for the IceCaps.  But tonight St. John’s came out to win, backstopped by a very confident Eddie Pasquale.

Despite going down 1-0 to the Bears in the first period thanks to a rocket from Jakub Vrana, the IceCaps stayed up on their skates and put the pressure on Hershey every step of the way.  Pasquale made a number of critical saves and tracked the puck constantly.

Max Friberg evened the score in the second period, with assists from Brandon McNally and Andrew Yogan.  That puts Yogan’s current point-streak at five games, ever since signing his PTO with St. John’s.

Then in the third period, Bud Holloway gave his team the go-ahead goal on the power play and Hershey could not recover.

Ryan Johnston took a hard hit into the boards and had to be helped off the ice; he did not return.  Sylvain Lefebvre also had to head down the tunnel a few moments later when the Bears tried to clear the zone and the puck went into the St. John’s bench, hitting Lefebvre.  He returned to the bench within minutes.

Charles Hudon and Darren Deitz were the latest callups to Montreal, on emergency status due to injuries in Montreal.

The Hershey Bears come into Mile One Centre again on Sunday afternoon for a matinee against the IceCaps.

Game Report

Despite a few battle scars from the previous night, the IceCaps took to their home ice on Saturday night ready for another round with the Albany Devils.  And they came out blazing.

Nikita Scherbak continued his success on the first line with a power play goal just six minutes into the game, assisted by Bud Holloway and Ryan Johnston.  Joel Hanley also found the back of the net with assists from Max Friberg and Andrew Yogan.

But then the Devils found their footing. By the end of the first period, they had answered with four consecutive goals.  The IceCaps only mustered three shots on goal in the period, which didn’t help them keep the scoring more even.

Holloway got one goal back for St. John’s in the second period, and then in third it was Brandon McNally who got the equalizer in the third.  Both teams had a couple of good chances late in regulation but the goaltenders kept the score even at four each.

Overtime gave the IceCaps an opportunity to get six more shots on goal, but none of them would get through.  Yogan took a holding penalty and the Devils scored the winner on the ensuing power play.

Despite the loss, it was a good night for Scherbak with a goal and two assists, and newcomer Yogan has tallied an assist in each of the two games he’s played for St. John’s.  He had to be helped off the ice at the end of the game, however, after going down awkwardly and favoring his left foot.

The Icecaps now look to Tuesday night when the Binghamton Senators come to St. John’s for a two-night series.

Game Report

It had been almost a week since the last time the IceCaps took the ice for a game.  After finally grabbing a win in Syracuse at the end of a disappointing road trip, the team had a few days to rest and practice before welcoming the Albany Devils to the Mile One Centre.

The first period was rather sluggish, with St. John’s only getting four shots on goal.  Only one penalty, against Gabriel Dumont, was called in the opening frame – a quiet 20 minutes to be sure.

The second period, however, was the polar opposite.  Charles Hudon scored his 19th goal of the season during a power play, assisted by Dumont and Nikita Scherbak.  The goals came fast and furious after that, with Alexander Ranger and Brandon McNally both scoring within another minute or so.

Then things got pretty intense.  Five fights were recorded in the period, with Mark MacMillan and John Scott both getting thrown out with game misconducts.  Scherbak was the victim of a dirty hit from behind which tossed him toward the visiting bench and into the stanchion.  Scott took exception and landed a flurry of solid left jabs onto the face and head of Ben Thomson.

The Devils managed to get one goal on the board in the third period, but the IceCaps didn’t let them get any farther in the scoring race.  It was a solid team win to kick off this home stand as they try to make a push toward the playoffs down the stretch.

The Icecaps face the Albany Devils again on Saturday night for the second game of the back-to-back and the final game in the season series.

Game Report

After an exciting shootout win on Wednesday night, the IceCaps came in to Binghamton to face a struggling Senators team. The first period was filled with energy, some tensions, some scrums, and a lot of scoring chances – but no goals.  The teams each took one minor penalty, but neither power play unit could convert.

The second period proved to be the frame where all of the night’s scoring would take place. The Senators got on the board first when Zach Fucale got caught out on a rebound and found the puck sailing up over his head.  About six minutes later Michael McCarron drove hard through the Sens zone, dipped down below the net and smoothly fed a pass up ice to Brandon McNally who fired a shot into the net from the high slot.

After a bad turnover led to a Senators breakaway goal later in the period, offensive play seemed to grind to a halt.  The IceCaps stayed out of the penalty box, but their power play units just couldn’t connect and the pucks weren’t getting through. The IceCaps battled hard through to the last second, but couldn’t find an equalizer.

Tonight’s game marked the debut of newcomer Evan Rankin. Charles Hudon went into the boards awkwardly in the second period and seemed to be favoring his ankle afterward.

The Icecaps face off against the Senators again tomorrow night.

ST. JOHN’S, NL (February 3, 2016) – Montreal Canadiens and St. John’s IceCaps General Manager Marc Bergevin announced today the IceCaps have recalled forwards Brandon McNally and Angelo Miceli from the Brampton Beast of the ECHL.

McNally was signed by the IceCaps to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season in May. The 21-year-old has registered one goal and two assists in 23 games with St. John’s and an assist in six games with the Beast.

The IceCaps signed Miceli to an American Hockey League contract for the 2015-16 season in September. The 21-year-old has collected three goals and an assist in 16 games with the IceCaps and seven goals and 12 helpers in 24 games with the Beast.
