Game Report

Last night’s game was impressive. Tonight’s game…was not.  Sluggish, uninspired, and sloppy are good adjectives to describe this complete turnaround from the previous night.

One bright spot was newcomer Andrew Yogan. He scored his fourth goal of the season (and first with St. John’s) with a smooth wraparound in the first period.  That gives him a four-game point streak starting with his first game with the IceCaps.

Things went downhill quickly from there.  Penalties were minimal, though many could have been called on both sides.  The first Binghamton goal came after officials reviewed a scrum in front of the net and determined the puck crossed the goal crease.

It was a disappointing effort from a team which dominated the night before and who need every point possible to maintain contention in the playoff race.

The Icecaps next welcome the Hershey Bears to Mile One Centre on Saturday night for the first of two games over the weekend.

Game Report

This was the kind of game the IceCaps needed as they push to stay in the playoff race.  It only took 39 seconds after puck drop for Max Friberg to pot the game’s first goal, assisted by Gabriel Dumont and Darren Dietz.

Next it was Shane Bakker’s turn to light the lamp, getting his first goal of the season. Andrew Yogan and John Scott assisted on Bakker’s goal, the third consecutive game with a helper for Yogan.

Dumont then scored a goal of his own in the waning seconds of the first period and the IceCaps headed to the dressing room up 3-0 at first intermission.

Penalty minutes started being served in the second period when Zach Stortini went hard at Morgan Ellis behind the net and Bakker dropped the gloves to defend his teammate.  The Senators were able to tally two goals in the second period, but Charles Hudon answered with a power play goal and Eddie Pasquale kept Binghamton out of the net for the rest of the game.

The Icecaps face the Binghamton Senators again on Wednesday night to finish out the back-to-back series.

Game Report

Friday night’s loss in Binghamton left the IceCaps looking for a solution to the persistent problem of how to get a win against the Senators.  They came out in Saturday night’s game with a lot of energy, obviously frustrated with their inability to find a way to get pucks past Chris Driedger.

That frustration spilled over early on in a game that saw three fights and a number of boarding and roughing calls.  Darren Dietz, Shane Bakker, and Michael McCarron all dropped the gloves with opponents. Senators captain Zach Stortini tried numerous times to get John Scott to go as well, but with no luck.

Casey Bailey got the home team on the board late in the first period after McCarron made a bad drop pass behind the net to a Binghamton player who fed the puck right to Bailey in the slot. After that, the goals kept coming for the Senators and it wasn’t until the third period when the IceCaps finally got on the scoreboard with a goal by Morgan Ellis.

The third period looked like a completely different game, with St. John’s getting 19 shots on goal compared to a cumulative nine shots on goal in the first forty minutes.

A highlight reel moment came in the dying moments of the game as Bud Holloway sprawled across the ice deflecting the puck with an outstretched stick away from the IceCaps empty net.

Once again, however, it was too little too late and the IceCaps left the ice with another loss.

The Icecaps continue their road trip by heading to Albany next for a game against the Devils on Wednesday night.

Game Report

After an exciting shootout win on Wednesday night, the IceCaps came in to Binghamton to face a struggling Senators team. The first period was filled with energy, some tensions, some scrums, and a lot of scoring chances – but no goals.  The teams each took one minor penalty, but neither power play unit could convert.

The second period proved to be the frame where all of the night’s scoring would take place. The Senators got on the board first when Zach Fucale got caught out on a rebound and found the puck sailing up over his head.  About six minutes later Michael McCarron drove hard through the Sens zone, dipped down below the net and smoothly fed a pass up ice to Brandon McNally who fired a shot into the net from the high slot.

After a bad turnover led to a Senators breakaway goal later in the period, offensive play seemed to grind to a halt.  The IceCaps stayed out of the penalty box, but their power play units just couldn’t connect and the pucks weren’t getting through. The IceCaps battled hard through to the last second, but couldn’t find an equalizer.

Tonight’s game marked the debut of newcomer Evan Rankin. Charles Hudon went into the boards awkwardly in the second period and seemed to be favoring his ankle afterward.

The Icecaps face off against the Senators again tomorrow night.

Game Report

The most memorable moments of the night both came from Bud Holloway: a desperation skate save in the dying minutes of the game with the IceCaps net empty and a kiss that he planted on the helmet of linemate Charles Hudon when the Kiss Cam featured the duo on the score clock during a stoppage of play.

It was that kind of night.

The Senators took advantage of an IceCaps team who got into Binghamton in the wee hours of the morning. The BSens came out of the gate strong scoring just 1:20 into the opening frame. The Senators went up by two on their first power-play of the game seven minutes into the game.

To say the game was physical is putting it mildly. Chippy play, scrums after whistles, and multiple scraps between Stefan Fournier and Guillaume Lepine. Finally, late in the second period, the IceCaps began to show some life after Sven Andrighetto and Fournier each potted a goal.

The momentum had seemingly swung in the visiting team’s direction, but they couldn’t fully surmount a comeback to tie the game. Zach Fucale held off the Binghamton offense through the final horn, but the Senators were able to edge out the IceCaps 3-2.

The IceCaps will start the new year and complete their road trip on Saturday when they meet the Utica Comets.

Game Report

Sometimes the games that you are ‘supposed’ to win are the hardest to play.

Fans of the Montreal Canadiens organization divided their attention between the IceCaps and the Habs on Saturday night. The Canadiens were in North Carolina to face the last place team in the Eastern conference of the NHL. They came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 final in Raleigh.

St. John’s was in Binghamton to wrap up their road trip against the Senators, winners of just five games coming into this night. Marc MacMillan opened the scoring just four minutes into the game.  Matt Puempel replied quickly for the Senators.

The Sens started the game with a bit of a chip on their shoulders and were ornery throughout. Just over eight minutes in Jeremy Gregoire tangled with Max McCormick. It was an extended tilt with a flurry of blows. The IceCaps bench took note of McCormick getting in an extra punch to the head while Gregoire was on the ice.

Just two minutes later Mike McCarron put down Nick Tuzzolino with a single solid punch. Tuzzolino left the ice for repairs in the dressing room. The fight was over so quickly that the two were given minors for roughing.

The IceCaps failed to develop any momentum after their first goal. Similarly the one-sided fight did nothing to spark the lethargic offense. And the Senators, who haven’t been in many games this season, seized the chance for a rare win.

The backbreaker for the IceCaps was a Senators goal by Ryan Dzingel with just 85 seconds left in the second period.

The IceCaps are really feeling the impact of injuries and call-ups at this point of the season. They have become a one line offense of Mike McCarron, Charles Hudon and Bud Holloway. While having great season in their own right, McCarron and Hudon play different games and have shown little chemistry playing together.

The IceCaps will return to St. John’s on Sunday with a four game home-stand on the schedule starting on Friday against the Rochester Americans..

IceCaps Split Series with Binghamton in St. John’s

ST. JOHN’S, NL. — After a successful opening weekend at home, the IceCaps hosted the Binghamton Senators for a Tuesday – Wednesday series at Mile One Centre in St. John’s.

Game one was a back and forth affair which saw the lead change a few times before heading to overtime. In the second period alone, we witnessed a combined five goals and three fights. The IceCaps carried a two goal lead into the final 10 minutes but the Senators tied it up late, and managed to score in overtime to take the win.

The real star of this game however was Captain Gabriel Dumont. Registering two goals, he was an assist shy of the Gordie Howe hat-trick after dropping the gloves with David Dziurzynski. Dumont standing a mere 5-foot-10-inches stood in with the 6-foot-3-inch Dziurzynski Although mismatched, Dumont demonstrated once again why he’s the leader on this young team, a true demonstration of what it means to put your team first.

Game two was a similar story, but different result. The IceCaps once again took a lead, this time up 3-0 heading into the second period. The Senators took over in the second to pull it back to one, however that was as close as they would get as Zach Fucale held the fort.

There is no way to overplay how significant Fucale’s play was in this game. Encouraging for IceCaps and Habs fans alike, Fucale stopped 40 of 42 shots on goal for the win. Although he stopped 34 of 36 on Friday night, the game was never truly in reach on Friday, as opposed to this game which had a single goal differential through the entirety of the third period.

Additionally in Fucale’s debut he appeared shaky, at times giving up sloppy rebounds and was fortunate that the defence was able to clear the puck from the crease, however Wednesday night he just dominated. Looking calm and collected, Fucale is making an early case to take the reigns as the No. 1 guy in St. John’s after Dustin Tokarski lost on Tuesday night.

Fucale would be wise to emulate the poise and mindset as Carey Price. Over the next few years with the IceCaps, Fucale will have plenty of opportunity with coach Lefebvre to hone his physical and mental skillsets.

St. John’s is now off to a 4-1-1 start, and will have their hands full when they take on the 5-1-0 Bridgeport Soundtigers on Friday and Saturday night at Mile One Centre. This will be a reunion of sorts for Sebastien Collberg. The Islanders prospect was traded to the Islanders in the Thomas Vanek trade in 2014. He played two games with the Bulldogs in 2012-13 but went through a couple rookie camps with other Canadiens prospects now calling St. John’s home.

As part of league realignment announced by the AHL today in Chicago, the IceCaps will now play in the North Division of the Eastern Conference alongside the Marlies (Toronto Maple Leafs), Binghamton Senators (Ottawa Senators), Utica Comets (Vancouver Canucks), Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sabres), Syracuse Crunch (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Albany Devils (New Jersey Devils).

In their previous four seasons, the IceCaps competed in the Atlantic Division with the Portland Pirates, Worcester Sharks, Providence Bruins and Manchester Monarchs.

The format for the 2016 Calder Cup Playoffs will be finalized by the Board of Governors at its Annual Meeting in Hilton Head Island, S.C., July 6-9, and the complete playing schedule for the 2015-16 regular season, which begins Oct. 9, will be announced later this summer.

MONTREAL – The Hamilton Bulldogs, the Montreal Canadiens’ AHL affiliate, will play two games on the Bell Centre ice during the 2013-14 regular season. Under the direction of former Canadiens defenseman and Hamilton head coach Sylvain Lefebvre, the Bulldogs will successively host the Syracuse Crunch, Tampa Bay’s AHL affiliate, on November 22 and the Binghamton Senators, Ottawa’s AHL farm team, on February 21, 2014.

The two games from the Bulldogs 2013-14 regular season schedule will give Montreal hockey fans an opportunity to see some of the organization’s prospects. Last year, the Bulldogs had a 1-1 record at the Bell Centre winning 3-2 against the Rochester Americans and dropping a 4-1 decision to the Crunch.

It will be the Bulldogs’ 10th and 11th contests at the Bell Centre in the history of the AHL franchise. The Bulldogs first ever match-up at the Bell Centre was played on March 18, 2007 versus the Syracuse Crunch, just a few weeks before the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate captured the first Calder Cup in franchise history. Carey Price, the Canadiens current goaltender, was a member of that championship Bulldogs squad in 2006-07.

Tickets for those two match-ups starting as low as $15.50 will go on sale on Saturday, September 21 at 12 p.m. (noon). Family packages are available for as low as $99 and include four tickets in the reds, four hot dogs and four soft drinks. Also, fans purchasing tickets for both Bulldogs games at the Bell Centre will enjoy 15% off.
